No one was injured in an early morning fire that destroyed a house in Bunker Hill today.
According to a Coos Bay Fire & Rescue press release, at about 2:51 a.m., the Coos Bay Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire at 63970 Mullen Road. Upon arrival, fire crews found the rear of a home fully involved in flame.
It took crews 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Three engines, one aerial truck and a support unit with 19 firefighters responded to the alarm. Units were on the scene for almost three hours.
The occupants, who were renting the home, were Sheena Thomas, 32; Lance Bias, 33; a 14-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy. They were home at the time of the fire. According to Coos Bay Fire Battalion Chief Howard Owens, Bias suffered smoke inhalation, and was treated at the scene by medical personnel.
There were no other injuries in the fire, but several family cats were lost. The family did not have insurance to cover their loss. The local American Red Cross team was called in to help the family.
The house is owned by Ben Muth and Gary Pickett of Coos Bay. The structure was insured, according to the press release. Fire officials estimated the loss to be $60,000 to the structure and $15,000 to the contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
