IMBLER (AP) — An Eastern Oregon man shot and killed a female cougar that jumped over a fence and sat in his family’s yard.

Mike Coughlan’s wife, Lisa, spotted the cougar Saturday morning.

“At first I thought it was a dog but then I saw that it had a big tail,” she said. She then screamed: “There is a cougar in our yard!”

Mike Coughlan unlocked his gun case, pulled out a rifle and stepped into the backyard. He waited for the cougar to emerge from behind the shed and then fired, killing it instantly.

The Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists removed the cougar. ODFW biologist Jim Cadwell estimates the 53-pound cougar was less than a year old. He said there was no evidence of other cougars in the neighborhood.

Lisa Coughlan later learned that people driving by had spotted the cougar in an alley next to her house. She wished they had warned her: “Did they think we had a pet cougar?”

Go hug a tree LC, at least they won't bite! Cougars are predators; the fact it had been seen previously in the area is an indication that it was making itself at home and sooner or later, it would need to eat.

Let's see...I am a cougar..I am going to hunt for something or maybe just snack on that small child that would be easy prey.

There was a fella in Idaho that went to see grizzly bears in the wild. When they mauled him, he expressed shock..."I didnt know they were aggressive like that!"

Tell you what LC....we will bring a cougar to your backyard, wont tell you it is there, and you can have your kids experiment as to whether or not it is "aggressive."

hugabunnies....good lord.

LC-You obviously dont live in eastern oregon, ur right, ive never been to a GAME PARK, but ive spent alot of time in the wilderness,in oregon and alaska.Alot different than a game park, wouldnt you say, no you couldnt say, because you dont have a clue. you dont think cougar's are agressive?, next time you go to a game park, go pet one, or scratch the belly of a cute bear.

RM, obviously the cougar was not agressive. They had to lure it out into the open to kill it. They could have easily darted it and relocated it. They also said there were no other cougars in the area. Evidently, you have never been to a Safari Park or Animal Refuse - Cougars are not aggressive animals, especially young ones. AND YEAH!!! BRING HIM TO MY BACK YARD. I would have taken him to the Wildlife Safari or West Coast Game Park.

LC-maybe they should have trapped the baby kitty and turned him loose in your back yard, im sure that a couger half the size of your dog could EASILY EAT YOUR DOG!!!

They might have chilren playing in their yard. Cougars don't make very good pets. Just ask Terry Irwin!

Killing baby cougars. What is the purpose of the ODFW. Couldn't they have trapped and relocated the baby - 53 lbs - that's half the size of my dog.
