EUGENE (AP) — United Airlines will increase its daily service between Eugene and San Francisco by 15 percent, from 382 seats to 440, Eugene Airport manager Tim Doll said this week.

United eliminated its mainline service to Eugene in 2003 during a market downturn and replaced it with United Express service: 50-seat to 66-seat regional jets operated by SkyWest Airlines.

Starting March 30, United will fly a 110-seat Boeing 737 to the airport.

Allegiant Air is the only airline currently flying large jets into Eugene; however, it only goes to Las Vegas and does not offer connecting flights.

Doll said people find larger planes more comfortable, and the lack of them is the No. 1 complaint he gets from passengers.

The big jets will come in handy for this summer’s U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. Doll said the switch will enable pole vaulters to fly into Eugene with their poles. The smaller regional jets couldn’t accommodate the lengthy equipment.

Doll said United’s flights between Eugene and San Francisco have been 90 percent to 95 percent full, so it made sense for United to expand. About two-thirds of the travel is for business.
