The following are community events planned on the South Coast in the coming days and weeks.
CB community garden work party on Friday
Calling all volunteers. A work party will gather at the Lady Bug Landing Community Garden at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
The garden is located at the corner of Eighth Street and Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay. The group will be moving chips into the pathways and mulching the Master Gardener area (outside perimeter of the garden). Volunteers also will be pruning raspberries and doing minor weeding.
Those who can are asked to bring wheelbarrows, gloves, shovels, weeding tools, hand pruners and a will to work. This is payback hours for Master Gardener trainees and veterans.

Barn dance features seven-member band
The South Coast Folk Society will host an evening of music and dance at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Greenacres Grange Hall, 93393 Greenacres Lane, south of Coos Bay.
Dancers of all ages and abilities are welcome, according to a press release. Music will be provided by “The All-Girl Impromptu Pick-Up Band,” This seven-member group features autoharp, fiddles, concertina, bass, guitar and piano. Guest caller will be Stacy Rose.
The event is open to singles, couples and families. The evening begins with basic circle and contra dances, and then a variety of easy-to-learn, energetic dances are taught throughout the night.
Admission is $5; students and seniors pay $4; and children under 6 get in for free. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. This is an alcohol-, tobacco- and fragrance-free event. For more information, those interested can call Stacy at 756-4701 or Paul at 572-5370.
Fiddlers to play at Winchester Bay
The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers, District 5, will hold their monthly jam from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Winchester Bay Fire Hall, located next to the fire station. Everyone is invited to attend an afternoon of music and dancing.

Anti-abortion group to hold demonstration
The next public event of the Coos County Chapter of Oregon Right to Life will be “Take a Stand for Life” from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. The event will be held in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, which took place on Jan. 22, 1973, and made abortion legal.
Participants will hold signs and march around the block of the Bay Area Information Center in downtown Coos Bay, between Commercial and Anderson avenues; or stand facing passing traffic on U.S. Highway 101, as and expression of the First Amendment right to free speech.
The event will be the seventh-annual commemorative rally that mourns the death of the more 47 million children who have died since Roe vs. Wade, according to an Oregon Right to Life newsletter.
Citizen Corps to meet next week in NB
The Coos County Citizen Corps is a grassroots organization committed to helping the community to become stronger and more resilient in the event of a disaster.
The organization will meet at 6:30 p.m. quarterly at the Community Health Education Center, 3950 Sherman Ave., North Bend. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 24. Other meetings are scheduled for March 26, June 24, Aug. 26, Sept. 23 and Dec. 23. For more information, those interested can call Connie Bunnell at 267-3216.
Veterans invited to VA Roseburg open house
The Roseburg VA Healthcare System Outpatient Mental Health Clinic will have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Thursday.
The clinic is located at 913 N.W. Garden Valley Blvd., in building 2, in Roseburg. Executive staff will be present from 10 to 11 a.m. for an informal welcome. Veterans, their families and the public can come for refreshments and a tour of the expanded clinic.

Church shows movie ‘Amazing Grace’
There will be a free movie night on at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the North Bend United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade St.
The movie will be “Amazing Grace” (2007), about William Wilberforce and his fight to end the British slave trade in the 19th century. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. There will be a discussion after the movie. The public is welcome.
Grandparent support group to meet
Grandparents ROCK (Raising Our Children’s Kids) will resume the ongoing monthly support group at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Faith Lutheran Church, 2741 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
At the meeting, Don van Dyke will cast “Snow White and the Dwarfs.” Van Dyke is the director of the Western Academy of Television and Theater for Children and Handicapped Persons.
