Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:27 AM PST

A number of home school students and others who did not get a chance to try out at their own schools for the annual Elks Hoop Shoot competed Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon for a spot in the Bay Area finals.

The annual event, which is free for students from 8 to 13 years old, is held across the country. Winners of the Bay Area finals this Sunday will advance to the district competition in Roseburg on Feb. 2 to compete against others from Coos and Douglas counties, including winners from the Coquille Valley finals this past weekend.

The Bay Area finals will be held this Sunday at Marshfield High School. Aside from those who qualified over the weekend, the competitors include the winners from the local school competitions.

Registration will be held at 2 p.m., with the competition starting at 2:30. For more information, those interested can contact Scott Lancaster at either 297-6502 (cell) or 756-5502 (home).

Results from the Coquille Valley finals will be included in the Community Sports section of Saturday’s edition of The World.
