Prep Recap for Jan. 15: Reedsport basketball teams get wins at Marshfield
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:27 AM PST

Reedsport’s girls basketball team battled to a 41-27 win over Marshfield’s junior varsity team at Pirate Palace on Monday.

Hannah Smith had 15 points and Chelsea Hitchcock added 11 for the Braves, who outscored the Pirates 11-2 in the first quarter before allowing Marshfield to get back into the game. Reedsport pulled away in the final quarter.

Emily Beasley had 10 points and Tori Scott eight for the Pirates.

The Braves, who have a bye in the Sunset Conference schedule today, wanted a chance to play on the Marshfield gym to become familiar with the building in case they reach the season-ending Sunset Conference tournament, to be held in the same location.

“I appreciate Marshfield letting us come down to play,” said Reedsport girls coach and athletic director Lynn Fulps.

Reedsport boys win

Reedsport’s boys completed a sweep of the Pirates with a hard-fought 61-56 victory in the late game at Marshfield on Monday.

Jason Fishel had 21 points and Sean Horton added 17 for the Braves, who led by one point entering the final quarter.

“We played pretty well,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh. “When it came right down to it, they did what they had to do.”

The Braves lost Cody Savey to an injury in the first quarter and came into the game without starter David King, who might miss the rest of the season for disciplinary reasons.

Ismael Osorio and Brice Young scored eight points for Reedsport and Jeff Wilmarth added seven.

Joey Morgan had 14 points, Ethan Schade 12 and Cody Dew 10 for the Pirates.

Reedsport gets back into action Friday when the Braves host Glide. Hixenbaugh hopes the win Monday swings momentum in Reedsport’s favor. The Braves had lost six straight games after beating Coquille in the league opener.

“We had a losing streak going,” Hixenbaugh said. “Maybe this will help get things back on the right track.”
