Reedsport tuned up for the Top of the Worlds Classic in Roseburg by reaching the Class 3A quarterfinals at the Oregon Classic in Redmond.
Myrtle Point also reached the quarterfinals in the event.
The tournament included 16 Class 3A teams, split into four four-team pools during the first day.
On the opening day of the tournament, Reedsport beat Dayton 78-8 and Riverside 61-18 and lost a close match to Rainier 39-38. In the quarterfinals Saturday, Burns edged the Braves 40-35.
Reedsport coach Phillip Lopez was pleased with his team’s performance in the event at Redmond. The Braves compete this week in a major tournament in Colorado.
“I think it was good preparation for the Top of the Rockies,” explained Lopez. “But at the same time it’s hard to compare the top 3A schools in Oregon, to the 5A- and 6A-sized schools that we’ll face in Colorado.”
John Covey (130 lb.) and John Drozek (135 lb.) each had solid performances at the Oregon Classic, finishing the tournament unbeaten with four wins each.
Myrtle Point, meanwhile, beat Colton 44-34, Burns 44-30 and Redmond’s junior varsity 45-34 to win its pool.
In the quarterfinals, the Bobcats fell 42-31 to Rainier.
Glide, another Sunset Conference team, won the tournament, beating Burns 46-34 in the championship round. |
