Former Bulldog Hibner honored for academics

North Bend graduate Megan Hibner finished her season on Oregon State University’s cross country team with an all-conference honor for her work in the classroom. The Beavers led the Pac-10 conference for the third straight year with 12 student-athletes making the all-academic teams. Hibner, a redshirt freshman, was named to the first team along with two of her teammates, Hayley Oveson and Krista Stangel. The honor was the first for Hibner, who is majoring in Early Childhood Development/ Elementary Education.
Clackamas basketball
Former Coquille Red Devil Monique Tribble started in 12 of the first 13 games for Clackamas Community College women’s basketball team.
Heading into NWAACC play, Tribble was leading the team with 106 total rebounds, averaging more than eight boards per game. She also was the second leading scorer for the Cougars with 175 points on the year, averaging 13.5 points per game. In a contest early this season, Tribble tied the Clackamas single-game record for blocked shots with seven against the Lower Columbia Community College Red Devils. After losses in their first two NWAACC games, the Cougars were 9-6 on the season.
Northwest Nazarine hoops
Former North Bend standout Janee Olds is having a solid start to her sophomore season for Northwest Nazarine’s women’s basketball team. Offensively, Olds is shooting more than 84-percent from the charity stripe, and is the fifth leading scorer with 86 points overall. She has also chipped in 20 steals defensively. At the Dixie State Christmas Tournament, Olds had the winning assist in the final seconds to take down host Dixie State 62-61. After taking the ball the length of the court, Olds hit Jennifer Williams, who knocked down a baseline jump hook as time expired. The Crusaders are 8-2 overall this season and won their first conference game against Western Oregon. Olds had eight points, two assists and two steals on the night.
LCC basketball
South Coast graduates Alysha Moore (NorthBend) and Lacy Looney (Myrtle Point)have begun their collegiate basketball careers at Lane Community College. During the preseason, Looney played in 11 games for the Titans, shooting more than 60-percent from beyond the arc, while pulling down 17 rebounds and adding 11 assists. Moore played in 13 games, scoring a total of 49 points and grabbing 31 boards. Both contributed in Lane’s wins over Portland and Clackamas to start league play.
OIT basketball
After two seasons at Umpqua Community College, former Myrtle Point standout Amanda Johnston has transferred to Oregon Institute of Technology. Johnston has been a consistent offensive threat for Oregon Tech, shooting 31-33 from the charity stripe on the year and averaging 9.8 points per game. Johnston has had a hot hand in three of the last four games for OIT, scoring 19, 23 and 24 points off the bench. Oregon Tech is 10-4 on the year.
SOU basketball
Former Bandon standout Trenton Fraser is having a solid season for the Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team. Fraser has started five of the first 14 games for the Raiders, shooting more than 80 percent from the free-throw line and averaging more than 10 points per game. Former Coquille standout Matt Pizzola also has seen playing time at Southern, though it has been limited. The Raiders are 4-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play on the year.
George Fox basketball
Former Brookings-Harbor standout Mark Metzler leads the George Fox University basketball team in minutes played, as well as total rebounds with 53. He also is second in assists with 20. George Fox was 4-5 in the preseason.
Boise State swimming
Former North Bend standout Denise Green has made a solid start to her collegiate swimming career at Boise State University. In the team’s first home meet, Green swam her way to a college-best mark in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first with a time of one minute flat. During the season Green also has competed on several different relay teams. The Broncos are 5-5 on the season, including a 10th-place finish at the Husky Invitational in Federal Way, Wash.
Washington swimming
Former North Bend star Kim Jasmer is continuing her successful collegiate swimming career at the University of Washington. Jasmer recently helped the Huskies to a second-place finish at the Husky Invitational (a four-day event), swimming her way to second place in the 1,650-meter freestyle. She also was a member of the 400-meter medley relay team that set the school record in the event with a time of 3:42. The Lady Huskies are 4-2 in dual meets this season.
Campbell University swimming
Former Marshfield standout Mary Beth Dellinger is in her second year of collegiate swimming at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. Dellinger had a strong showing at the Campbell Thanksgiving Invitational, finishing in sixth place in the 500-yard freestyle, while also placing second in the 400-yard individual medley, helping the Camels to win the meet with ease. Campbell is 3-4 in dual meets this season.
College of the Siskiyous football
Three former South Coast standouts, Simon Fraser of Bandon and brothers Vincent and Thomas Mayse of Marshfield, had a solid football season for the College of the Siskiyous. Thomas Mayse was the only of the three to see consistent playing time, while Vincent and Fraser both redshirted. Thomas was named the teams Special Teams Player of the Year for his aggressive play on the kickoff, kick return and punt return teams. The Eagles finished the year with a 6-5 record overall which also included a trip to the Central Division East County Bowl. The game resulted in a loss to Diablo Valley College, 33-23.
Western Oregon football
Former South Coast standouts Matt Buche and Brandon O’Neil completed their collegiate football careers at Western Oregon University when they traveled to St. George, Utah, to play in the Dixie Rotary Bowl on Dec. 1. The Wolves beat the Colorado School of Mines 26-12 in their last game. Buche had two solo and two assisted tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, and also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Western Oregon touchdown. O’Neil also started the game for the Wolves on the offensive line. Buche and O’Neil each had solid senior seasons to end their careers in a positive fashion. Western finished the year as the top-ranked independent school in the nation with a 9-2 overall record.
