Two blazes keep firefighters busy

A fire in Myrtle Point early Saturday morning destroyed one house and damaged another.

According to Myrtle Point Fire Chief Dan Gardner, at about 4:30 a.m., crews responded to a report of a fire at 420 Seventh St., behind the McKay’s market.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had spread from the house owned by Mark G. Greichus to an adjacent house, Gardner said. Information on the owner and residents of the other house was unavailable at press time.

About 30 firefighters responded to the call, including engines from Bandon and Coquille. Crews were unable to save the first structure, Gardner said. It was a total loss. The second house was saved.

An investigation into the cause is still ongoing, he added, but it’s believed the fire could have started from a space heater.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, Gardner said. The woman who rented the house at 420 Seventh St. was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital, where she was treated and released, said Keith Brown, from the Oregon State  Fire Marshal’s Office.
