A Coos Bay woman was cited Monday afternoon following a traffic accident.

According to a North Bend Police Department press log, at about 2:14 p.m., officers were called to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Broadway Street and Newmark Avenue in North Bend. Officers from the Coquille Tribal Police witnessed the accident, according to the log.

After an investigation, the driver of a 2005 Hyundai, Cheryl Kallman, 62, of Coos Bay, was issued a citation for careless driving by Tribal Police, the log said.

No further information was available as of press time.

Refer to the Worlds Newspaper I want to know article from a few months ago. They talked about the Tribal Police and what it was that they do and for what reasons.

To Linda: My comment was that I'm sure you would appreciate it if they responded to your call for help. However, your comment indicated that it would make you angry if they pulled you over. So, are you saying that you wouldn't want them to do either?

Good job OIFRED! You need to do burnouts in your SUV on Absurd's brain. I'd like to watch. Absurd your name really becomes you. Look up the defintion.

thank you jeff and Jen T. Policing one of the most unappreciated jobs...yeah they may give you a ticket once in a while (for breaking the law...) but wait until you actually need them, then you'll appreciate the jurisdictions that the agencies have.

OIFRED wrote on Jan 16, 2008 8:27 AM:

Hey, so what i drive an SUV and i am fighting in Iraq so you can say stupid stuff like that, and so i can drive my pollution causing SUV, so why dont you go hop in your Toyota Prius and hug a tree

Linda wrote on Jan 16, 2008 8:25 AM:

To Lindsay, no it would really piss me off if they pulled me over. And to Absurd get a grip! I didn't have anything to do with who was here first! I don't believe everything I was taught in history either. I don't go to the Casino, cause I like to go shopping! I drive a Pontiac , how do you get around and don't tell me on foot? This is 2008,I now live in this century!

Jen T. wrote on Jan 15, 2008 10:34 PM:

Thank you JEFF! As a member AND employee of the Coquille Indian Tribe, I still see your point. I've seen Tribal Police do supid things, but shouldn't you think of it as having someone else keeping our highways and raodways safe? If they hadn't seen it, that lady could've fled the scene and come and hit YOU in your vehicle. And instead of thinking of the casino as something else taking your money, think of all the people who have got jobs now who wouldn't have one otherwise who would be on welfare. You're paying for someone to have a job and some a better life.

Absurd wrote on Jan 15, 2008 6:43 PM:

No one is forcing you to patron their casino's. As far as jurisdiction goes, I think they were here first so you must have slept through that day in elementary school. Just because the caucasian race took over with disease and destruction. It doesn't change the fact they were here first. So go kill another buffalo for sport and pollute the air some more with your SUV's, and forget about it.

I'm thankful that the tribal police are able to assist other law enforcement officers. We are shorthanded as it is! I'm fairly certain you would appreciate it if they were responding to your call for help!

Jeff wrote on Jan 15, 2008 4:19 PM:

Tribal police are on a federal level and can issue citations whereever they please

Linda wrote on Jan 15, 2008 3:23 PM:

Thanks Bunkerhill Bob. That's exactly what I was getting at. And like tax exempt or something and still get to vote. Is this only in America or what?
Like I said I think I'm a minority in my own country.

I believe wrote on Jan 15, 2008 1:07 PM:

I believe If you are an Oregon Certified Police Officer, you have authority anywhere in the state. Most of the time, it's not practiced...but since tribal, cbpd, and nbpd are all so close together it happens here.

BunkerHillBob wrote on Jan 15, 2008 1:05 PM:

"How is it that the Tribal Police can issue citations. What happened to their tribal land? Or is everywhere considered tribal land. Shouldn't they have a juristriction????"
Simple: The "powers that be" decided long ago they could not enforce all the laws on the books and that tribes were looking for some additional revenue...It's not bad enough they take everyones wallet with their lousy casino's, now they want a piece of the highway "taxes" collected in Coos County.
Sorry if I sound or come across bitter; this whole thing allowing "tribal police" to enforce traffic laws stinks like rotten salmon.

Klam wrote on Jan 15, 2008 1:02 PM:

Linda, while asking that, ask why CB officers often assist NB officers, and vice versa. AFIK, if an officer witnesses an offense, they have to act on it, no matter where they are.
