A Coos Bay teenager was life-flighted to a Portland hospital Saturday after sustaining serious injuries in an all-terrain-vehicle accident.

According to a Coos County Sheriff’s Office press release, at approximately 1 p.m., deputies and personnel from the Hauser Rural Fire Protection District responded to a report of an injury ATV accident in the Oregon Dunes near Waterplant Hill. There, they found 17-year-old Jordan Waletich, of Coos Bay, who had dropped 25 to 30 feet from the top of a dune while operating his ATV. He had flipped over the handlebars and the vehicle landed on top of him. Jordan was transported to Bay Area Hospital and then life-flighted to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland with serious injuries. He was listed in fair condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Sheriff’s Office also is warning people to be careful while riding the dunes at this time of year, because storms can rapidly change the formation of the dunes and can cause steep drop-offs where none existed before. Also, if someone is involved in a crash and has hit his head or appears to have head, neck of back injuries, do not remove his helmet, the release said.

A male injured his back on Sunday in an ATV accident on the Third Beach Dunes.

According to a Reedsport Police Department press log, at approximately 2:11 p.m., Reedsport Police Department dispatch received a report of an ATV accident. A dispatcher said the injured male was able to get to the parking lot of the Third Beach Dunes, where he reported a back injury to a U.S. Forest Service ranger. The World was refused information regarding the injured person’s name, age and city of residence.

Lower Umpqua Ambulance and the Winchester Bay Fire Department Quick Response Team responded to the scene and the male was transported to Lower Umpqua Hospital.
