The Powers girls basketball team ended Elkton’s winning streak in Saturday’s Skyline League game by beating the Elk’s 50-35.

Elkton was 3-0 in league play prior to Saturday’s game as Powers entered the contest with a 2-1 record.

Bilhe Marshall led the Cruisers with a game-high 17 points.

“Bilhe had a ton of steals and rebounds,” said Powers coach Jody Cyr. “This was easily the best game of her career.”

Also, Nicole Bittner and Chelsea Standley each had nine points for Powers.

Leading Elkton was Stephanie McMillan with nine points.

The Powers victory, combined with Camas Valley’s upset win over Days Creek on Saturday, means no league teams are unbeaten.

UVC tips Pirates

Umpqua Valley Christian edged Pacific 40-37 in a Skyline League thriller.

Although the Pirates kept the game tight, Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag was disappointed with her team’s shooting.

“We had plenty of opportunities, we just couldn’t finish them,” said Freitag.

Even at the free-throw line, Pacific was only able to go 3-for-16.

Even as the Pirates stand 1-3 in league play, Freitag feels that her team is finally starting to come together.

“Both teams played a very aggressive game and our only problem was that we just couldn’t finish,” said Freitag. “I think that we are just one step away from turning the corner.”

Eva Digby and Jesse Culley led Pacific with 12 points each.

Sarah Harding had a game-high 14 points for the Monarchs.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cruisers get first win

Powers was able to come back in the second half to defeat visiting Elkton 38-32 in its first home game since mid-December.

After trailing by three at the half, the Cruisers came out hard in the third quarter, outscoring the Elks 13-6.

“We just came out with a lot more energy in the second half,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb.

Jake Stevens again led the Cruisers with 18 points.

Powers’ Mason Lieuallen also had a strong game, finishing with 13 rebounds and seven points.

Mario Celis had 14 points for the Elks.

Monarchs top Pacific

Visiting Umpqua Valley Christian defeated Pacific 65-51 in Saturday’s Skyline League play.

The Monarchs led the entire game, though Pacific was able to come within one point at the end of the first half.

“They shot the ball well outside and it’s hard to defend that,” said Pacific coach Wayne Everest. “Even their post player came outside for a three.”

UVC had seven 3-pointers.

Leading the Monarchs were Danny Schultz with 19 points, Ryan Graf with 17 points and Michael Graham with 14 points.

Michael Maynard had a team-high 18 points for the Pirates.

WRESTLING

Pirates take title at Coquille

Marshfield took top honors at the Coquille Invitational on Saturday.

Pirate brothers Tyler (103 pounds) and Tommy (130) Nixon each pinned their opponents in the championship matches. Alex Ware (152) was also a champion for Marshfield.

The Pirates scored 202 points to win the team title. Ashland finished second overall, with Jefferson third and host Coquille coming in fourth.

Finishing in third place for Marshfield were Anthony Stefani (125 pounds), Chris Welch (135), Cameron Winfrey (140), Eric Stout (171) and Cody Shipp (285).

Gold Beach champions Brandon Harding (140) and Travis Moore (189) were named outstanding wrestlers. Kelsey Carl (112) also won his final match for Gold Beach.

Other local champions include North Bend’s Jake Schneider (119) and Coquille’s Colton Holmes (135) and Jason Smith (285).
