The following are notices from groups that have scheduled meetings and events on the South Coast.
Senior computer club to meet next week
Computer security will be the topic for the Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club talk on Friday.
The group will meet at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Rd., Coos Bay. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will start at 10. Refreshments will be available.
The guest speaker will be Phillip Hermens from the Coos Bay Staples. He will explain what computer users need to know about computer security. Every time a person goes online he is open to many possible types of attacks. Hermens will discuss steps and programs that can be used to protect computers. There will be time for questions.
The club’s purpose is to help seniors learn about computers. Though all may attend, club members must be 50 years old or older. For more information, those interested can call 269-7396, 267-6163 or 266-9714.
Martin Luther King Jr. event planned in CB
The Egyptian Theatre is hosting a Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 21, in downtown Coos Bay.
The event is sponsored by the Human Rights Advocates of Coos County and is free to all. The celebration will include a presentation of the Annual Human Dignity Award, African drumming and short films. A candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Coos Bay Boardwalk. Lynda Cole will provide music and the Rev. John Lloyd will speak.

CB garden talk to include demonstration
Members and guests will learn all about container gardening at the February meeting of the Coos Bay Garden Club.
Master Gardener Jo An Conway will demonstrate how and what to plant in containers. There will be plenty of ideas for creative displays of container plants, illustrated with pictures, books and slides. Anyone with just a few square feet of outdoor space can enjoy gardening when using containers.
The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.
Coos Bay Garden Club meetings are open to interested members of the public. For more information, those interested can call 266-9025.
Library offering class on baby signing
For parents who would like learn more about signing with a baby or toddler, a free one-hour workshop for parents and caregivers will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave.
Children’s Librarian Sara Simpkins will teach adults how to get started signing and introduce them to the wide variety of resources the library has available for check out. Informational handouts also will be available, including a free 50-sign illustrated dictionary. The workshop is jam-packed with information. However, parents are asked to leave their mobile babies and toddlers at home so everyone in attendance can give full attention to the material being presented.

Live theater class planned in Bandon
The Waterfront Players Artistic Director Judy McDonald will teach a Live Theater Workshop for adults and students later this month.
The workshop is scheduled on Saturdays, Jan. 26, and Feb. 2, in the conference room at Bandon Public Library. The class runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
This class is geared to directors and producers, as well as actors. Actors of all levels of experience should find the class useful.
Topics for the class include a look at theater history; the various roles of the actor, director and producer; script reading; theater etiquette; coaching techniques; casting pitfalls; styles of direction; voice production; movement; speech and diction; theater games, and a lot of other miscellaneous tidbits learned over a lifetime in theater.
The registration fee is $45 per person for the two-day class and includes materials. A minimum of 10 attendees is required, with a maximum of 18. Registration forms can be obtained by e-mail McDonald at wprc@uci.net or by calling her at 756-2900.
Wool spinners to meet in Bandon
Those interested in handspinning wool can visit No Lazy Kates at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Wool Company, 990 Highway 101, in Bandon.

Bandon play group to read on Tuesday
The Bandon Play Readers Group has changed its regular meeting date to the third Tuesday of each month.
The next meeting will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the home of one of its members. This month’s play will be “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen.
