Veteran support group moves meeting place
Point Man Ministries has a new meeting place.
The support group will meet at Sobers, 181 Anderson Ave., in downtown Coos Bay. Pointman is an outreach group for local veterans, active-duty personnel and families since 1988. Egyptian movies feature the dark side
On Friday, the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay will show the creepy comedy “The Addams Family” (1991) at 7 p.m. The film stars Anjelica Houston, Raul Julia and other eerie folk.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, the featured movie will be Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “The Birds” (1963). “They massed by the thousands. By the tens of thousands,” the movie trailer said. The plot has killer birds attacking a small coastal town. Could it be Northern California — or the South Coast? Oh, the suspense. Stars Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Tippi Hedren, among other unfortunate souls.
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, it’s Oscar-nominated “High Society” (1956), starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra.
General movie admission costs $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members.

VFW to honor local students for patriotism
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post & Auxiliary No. 3182 will honor winners of the recent speech and writing contest.
There will be a presentation of the awards at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the North Bayside Grange Hall in Glasgow. Members and their friends are welcome.
This year’s winners include a high school student and a sixth-grader. Becky Soules, senior at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, won first place for her speech, “My Role in Honoring American Veterans.”
Haley De Andrea, a home schooled sixth-grader, won first place for her essay, “Why I Am An American Patriot.” Haley also won second place in the district competition.

BLM sponsoring a class on herbicides
A short course on herbicide use will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Coos Bay District Bureau of Land Management office, 1300 Airport Lane, North Bend.
The basic course will provide information on herbicide mixing, sprayer calibration and drift. The class is free and open to the public. No sign up is necessary.

Beekeepers share the buzz about bees
The Coos County Beekeepers meet the third Saturday of each month in Myrtle Point.
Beekeepers gather at 6:30 p.m., at the OSU Ohlsen Baxter Building at 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point. Anyone interested in bees is welcome to attend. For more information, those interested can call Jane at 396-4016.
