Square dancers to hoof it in Coos BayThe Saints ‘n’ Aints square and round dancing club will hold its first dance of 2008 on Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 123 Ocean Blvd., Coos Bay. Dancing will begin at 7 p.m., with pre-rounds cued by Donna Hiserote. Square dancing will begin at 7:30, to veteran caller Sherm Welch.

Bandon dancers meet for weekly sessionA dance will be held on Saturday at the Farwest Hall on state Highway 42 South in Bandon.
A lesson will be held at 7:30 p.m. and the dance will start at 8.
VFW group plans meeting in Coos Bay The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7488 will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at Gussie’s restaurant, 1088 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay.

Women’s club to talk about picture-transfer quiltsThe Coquille-Myrtle Point After-5 Club will host Girl’s Night Out, “Memories of Cloth,” from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Frazier’s Banquet Room, 23 E. First St., Coquille.
Roxy Murray will show how to do picture transfer quilting, Teckla Wilson will sing and Kandi Wyatt, a young mom with five children ages 4 to 18, will share “how her fairy tale life was turned upside down before she learned the secret to happily ever after,” a press release said.
The event will cost $7.50 and includes a mini-chef salad or finger-food sandwich. Reservations are requested and should be canceled by Monday, or used by a friend. Free nursery care is provided by request.

Class teaches stained glass techniquesThe Coquille Valley Art Center is offering stained glass classes in a seven-week program.
They will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, starting Jan. 7, and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays, starting Jan. 11, at the center, 10144 state Highway 42. The classes cost $66 for members and $78 for non-members.

Theater workshop is planned in BandonThe Waterfront Players Actor’s Center is sponsoring a Live Theater Workshop for adults and students.
The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at the Bandon Public Library.
Judy Elliot McDonald will teach the live theater workshop. This class is geared to directors and producers, as well as actors.
Those who plan to attend should dress comfortably (stretchy). At various times in the class, participants may do stretching or relaxation exercises possibly on the floor. Layering clothing is wise. Comfortable shoes are recommended, but it would be helpful to bring a pair of dress, or non-athletic shoes for certain exercises.
There will be a short break in the morning and again in the afternoon session. Participants should bring drinks, snacks and lunch. There also will be a lunch break.
For students younger than 18, a parent must sign a release form. Parents should accompany the student to sign the form immediately before the first class.

Anonymous HIV tests available in Coos BayThere will be free, anonymous HIV testing from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, at the South Coast Hospice Community Bereavement and Education Center, 1620 Thompson Road, in Coos Bay. There will be no needles, and results will be available in 20 minutes. No appointment is necessary.
Testing is encouraged for people who have had any kind of unprotected sex; shared needles for drugs, tattoos, body piercing or steroids; or had a sexually transmitted disease.

Hospital offers info to people with diabetesBay Area Hospital in Coos Bay sponsors diabetes support/talk groups from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays at the hospital. The group offers people a chance to share thoughts and feelings about diabetes, and find support and understanding.
