The Southwestern Oregon Community College women’s basketball team had its first tournament of the preseason without a win, coming up short in two games at the Chemeketa tournament in Salem.
The Lakers lost to host Chemeketa 64-42 in the opener.
“We did not play well in this game at all,” said Southwestern coach Stacia Rustad. “Coming off Christmas break, just a lot of breakdowns — too many turnovers, not doing the little things that we need to do to win, let alone improve.”
Rachael Matthews was Southwestern’s only player in double figures with 10 points. Veronica Rand had nine points and Briana Wallace eight. The Lakers shot just 20 percent in the first half and fell behind 29-12.
On Friday, Southwestern came up just short against fellow NWAACC South Region foe Linn-Benton, ranked eighth in the most recent NWAACC coaches poll, falling 72-65.
“Obviously, we stepped up our game in every category,” Rustad said. “To be able to not only compete, but have an opportunity to beat a team like Linn-Benton ... we were very, very pleased with our performance.
“We played about 35 minutes of excellent basketball and in the end, they had a couple young ladies that hit some big shots and our shots didn’t drop. We played a great game, and definitely improved tenfold in this one.”
Wallace had 26 points and Rand added 16 points and eight rebounds. Matthews had a team-high nine rebounds and Rand and Wallace had four steals each.
“Briana Wallace had just an awesome game,” Rustad said. “She stepped on the floor ready to play.
“As a team, we played great, just quality team defense, so we’re very pleased with that.”
The Lakers got only limited minutes in the tournament from Kathleen Luce, who suffered a hand injury. In the Linn-Benton game, Joy Ribao fouled out, which also hurt the team’s chances late.
“I was very pleased that we were able to bounce back after a very sub-par performance against Linn-Benton,” Rustad said.
Southwestern hosts College of the Redwoods on Wednesday in its final game before league play starts.
The game is part of a doubleheader. Southwestern’s men face Linfield’s junior varsity team at 2 p.m., with the women taking the court at 4 in their home opener. The teams open the counting season at Mount Hood on Saturday.
