This band’s music is described as traditional jazz — jazz in the spirit of the greats Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman and Bob Draga.

Clarinetist Michael Almich and his Club 7 Jazz Band will perform in concert at the Sprague Community Theater in Bandon beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5.

For Almich, it’s a homecoming. He’s a 2001 graduate of Bandon High and a 2005 graduate of the University of Oregon.

Joining Almich on stage will be Easton Stuard on piano, Dorian Crow on bass and Kyle Owen on drums. Owen is a Marshfield High School graduate who attends Portland State University. Vocalist Jessica Owen also recently joined the band. She also is Marshfield graduate and resides in Olympia, Wash., where she works as a youth counselor.

The concert set list will consist of songs from the band’s first album, as well as material being recorded over the weekend. Selections to be performed include “A Closer Walk,” “St. James Infirmary,” “Some of These Days,” “Sheik of Araby,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” a Benny Goodman segment, a New Orleans segment and many more. Almich said proceeds from the concert will be donated to activities for New Artists Productions, Bandon’s youth performing arts program that is tuition-free to participants.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students and are available at Bandon True Value Hardware, at the door or by calling 347-2517.

Proceeds from the concert will be donated to activities for New Artists Productions of Bandon. The group founded by Dan and Anita Almich, who are Michael Almich’s parents, is a youth performing arts program that is tuition-free to participants.

“Mom and Dad started New Artists to give young performers the chance to take the stage, and I was one of them early on,” stated Almich.  “Any way we can help encourage more young performers is fine with us.”
