Garcia Moncada may change plea
Less than a week after a judge scheduled a jury trial to begin in April, a man arrested in connection with the death of a Springfield couple will be at a change of plea hearing Friday morning.
The hearing for Noe Garcia Moncada, 30, will begin at 8:15 a.m. before Judge Martin Stone at the Coos County Courthouse in Coquille.
The hearing is a surprise move. Garcia Moncada appeared in court on Monday and Stone set an April 1, 2008, date for a trial.
Garcia Moncada is accused of fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run accident in North Bend on Oct. 16 that killed Dallas and Marilyn Vance. He faces four counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver.
In a press release from the Coos County District Attorney's Office, dated Dec. 20, Chief Deputy District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said he was unable to explain the additional hearing.
"Because of rules established by the Oregon State Bar on what I can say publicly about a pending criminal case, I cannot comment further until after the hearing tomorrow."
