Canby, Roseburg and Cleveland made strong headway toward a possible team title during the first day of the 33-team Coast Classic, while South Coast teams Marshfield, Coquille and host North Bend dropped into the bottom half of the team standings.
Going into today, Canby sits in first place with a team score of 73 — 2.5 points better than second-place Roseburg (70.5).
The Indians may have the best shot at winning the classic, considering they have a tournament-best 10 wrestlers still competing in the quarterfinals this morning. Canby has nine and Cleveland (57.5), which is tied for fourth with Crook County, has seven. Sprague (67) sits alone in third and has four wrestles remaining in the championship bracket.
Newberg finished just outside the top five with 57 points, followed by Redmond and Hillsboro (tied at 54.5), and Illinois Valley (49.5). Gresham rounded out the top 10 with 48.5 points.
Marshfield fared best of the three local schools, finishing in 25th with 28 points. Cameron Winfrey reached the quarterfinals for the Pirates.
North Bend is tied with South Medford for 26th — two points behind Marshfield. James Baker is the lone Bulldog who survived the first two rounds.
Coquille’s has just Colton Holmes remaining in the quarterfinals. The Red Devils, the only Class 3Ateam in the tournament, were tied with Bend for 30th with 17 points.
The quarterfinals start at 9 a.m., with the semifinals this afternoon and the finals are expected to start about 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students and concessions are available.
