Prep Recap for Dec. 14: Pirates outstroke Springfield

Marshfield’s swim team overwhelmed host Springfield, sweeping a Midwestern League dual meet.
The Marshfield girls won 110-59, while the boys won 110-53.
Kelsey Flathers won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke for Marshfield’s girls.
Jana Sadler took both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, Lisa Farr won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, and Astrid Lewon finished first in the 50 freestyle. The Pirates also won two of the three relays.
Marshfield’s boys were led by double-winners Garrett Swafford (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle) and Kacy Neal (100 freestyle and 100 backstroke). Kai Stufflbean won the 100 butterfly and Zach Flathers won the 200 individual medley and the Pirates took two of the three relays.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gold Beach gets win
Gold Beach beat host Marshfield’s junior varsity team 56-51 on Thursday.
Brett Martin had 14 points and Tim Young 10 for the Panthers.
“Our goal is to try to improve each game out,” said Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross. “Tonight, we had 10 of 12 players score, which is nice to see.”
Marshfield got 15 points from Joey Morgan, 13 from Cody Dew and 12 from Ethan Shade.
“Marshfield played good defense and executed their offense,” Ross said.
Tigers top Vikings
Junction City’s topped Siuslaw 55-27 in the opening round of the Junction City Tournament on Thursday.
Blair Wheadon scored 23 points to lead the Tigers. Jacob Mitchell had eight points to lead Siuslaw.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Panthers top Pirates
Gold Beach had its best offensive game of the year, beating Marshfield’s junior varsity team 56-29 on Thursday.
“We played better as a team,” said Gold Beach coach Jim Hulslander. “Our defense has been good. Our offense has struggled.”
Kayla Zuber had 18 points and Molly Hockema added eight for the Panthers.
Emily Beasley had 16 points for Marshfield.
Vikings fall
Junction City’s girls beat Siuslaw 83-23 in the opening round of the Junction City Tournament as Leah Mancino scored 13 points.
Kay Robertson had eight points for the Vikings.
