FLORENCE (AP) — An Oregon State Police trooper had to shoot and kill a black bear that broke into a home in Florence on the Oregon coast.

The homeowner said the bear broke into his house and approached him inside his garage on Monday before trying to break into his house again on Tuesday.

The bear was in a tree when the trooper arrived, and then climbed down and charged at him before the trooper killed it with a shotgun.

State wildlife officials say the male bear was among the bears people have been feeding in the Florence area, increasing the risk of conflict because the animals lose their fear of humans and sometimes avoid their natural winter hibernation.
