North Bend’s girls basketball team waged its first win of the season on the defensive.
The visiting Bulldogs held off a late rally to edge Phoenix 28-25 on Monday.
Phoenix had a chance to tie the game in the final 10 seconds but missed a 3-pointer.
“(Phoenix) was a lot tougher than we thought they would be. We fought with them until the end,” said North Bend coach Mike Forrester. “The girls are so excited, though, this was a huge win against a quality opponent and they truly deserved it.”
Brooke Davison led the Bulldogs with nine points while Jessianne Heley added seven and Alexandra Mateski six.
Red Devils win
Coquille got a game-high 15 points from Katy Pflaum on the way to beating Waldport 58-51 on Monday in nonleague make-up game from last week.
The host Red Devils led 37-27 at the break and stayed in control through the second half before Waldport rallied for 15 points in the final period.
Kalei Libby scored 11 points and Emily Usselman 10 for Coquille, which improved to 4-1.
