Police release identity of missing fisherman

Monday, December 10, 2007 |
Oregon State Police have identified a fisherman who fell overboard Friday morning, after the Coast Guard suspended a day-long search for him.
OSP troopers identified him as Andrew J. J. Herbert-Hopper, 22, of Tangent.
According to a Coast Guard news release, Coast Guard Group North Bend received a mayday call at 7:20 a.m. from the F/V Zora Belle that one of its crew members had fallen overboard in the Pacific Ocean, five miles northwest of the Siuslaw River.
Coast Guard Air Station North Bend and Coast Guard Air Facility Newport each launched HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crews along with two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River. Helicopter crews were on scene in 25 minutes.
The missing man was dressed in yellow rain gear at the time of his fall, but was not wearing a life jacket. He was believed to be unconscious when he fell.
The decision to suspend the search was made after rescuers searched a 100-square-mile area for more than eight hours, the release said. Expected survivability in these conditions is approximated at 41⁄2 hours.
“Falls overboard are a primary cause of fatalities in the fishing industry according to Coast Guard marine casualty statistics. Wearing a life jacket dramatically improves survivability of man overboard accidents,” the release said.
According to an OSP press release, a trooper took a missing person report for Herbert-Hopper at approximately 9:30 p.m. after the crabbing ship arrived in port. Interviews with the boat’s crew members was consistent with previous reports provided by the Coast Guard, the release said.
This morning OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said Herbert-Hopper is still missing. He said the case is not criminal in nature and the fisherman was likely washed off deck.
“We have no plans to continue any further search,” Hastings said.
