Coast Guard ends search for missing crabber

Sunday, December 09, 2007 |
The U.S. Coast Guard has not been able to find a man who fell off a fishing vessel Friday morning north of Florence. According to Lt. Josh Steffen, two lifeboats and two helicopters patrolled the seas for the missing crew member of the Zora Belle, a 72-foot boat that operates out of Charleston.
An Oregon State Police press release on Saturday identified the man as Andrew Jay Jessup Hebert-Hopper, 22, of Tangent.
Coast Guard dispatchers were notified of the man overboard at about 7:30 a.m., about 10 miles north of the Siuslaw River mouth.
Given Friday’s poor weather conditions, Steffen said, someone probably would not be able to survive longer than four and a half hours in the ocean. Still, the Coast Guard planned to continue to search the water at least until 6 p.m., Steffen said. The search area included a 20-nautical-mile radius from where the man fell into the ocean.
The man-overboard notice said the crewman was wearing rain gear — heavy clothes and boots than can drag a person down quickly in the water. Weather conditions on scene were 20 to 25 knot winds combined with 13-foot seas and 10 mile visibility. The water in the area was 50 degrees, the Coast Guard said.
Falls overboard are a primary cause of fatalities in the fishing industry according to Coast Guard marine casualty statistics, the press release said. Wearing a life jacket dramatically improves survivability of man overboard accidents.
