The boys championship game is at 7 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pacific Rim Tournament

Gold Beach and Santiam will play for the championship tonight after both teams won semifinal games Friday night.

The Panthers beat Etna, Calif., 43-29 in one of  the semifinal games Friday night.

Kourtney Moore had 13 points and Rendall MacLaurie and Katherine Zuber added eight each for the Panthers.

Tracy Thackeray had 11 for Etna, which had beaten Brookings-Harbor 32-25 earlier in the day.

Santiam used two big first quarters to win its games.

In the semifinals, Santiam opened a 27-7 lead over South Umpqua after one quarter on the way to a 65-39 win.

Ashley Walczak had 29 points and Heidi Halemeier 10 for Santiam. Triana Crane had 16 for the Lancers.

Earlier, Santiam scored 30 first-quarter points on the way to a  59-36 win over St. Mary’s.

Halemeier and Walczak each had 18 points for Santiam. Veronica Valdez had eight for St. Mary’s.

The Panthers beat Illinois Valley 50-33 in the opening round, behind 17 points from Katherine Zuber and 12 from Molly Hockema.

Jamie Tarc led the Cougars with nine points.

“We had a slow start and did not shoot the ball well as a team, but played better in the second half,” said Gold Beach coach Jim Hulslander, whose team had a 22-21 lead at halftime.

In the other first-round game, South Umpqua got 13 points from Tessa Falk to beat Bandon 55-40.

Julie Baker, Becky Butler, Jennifer Torres and Briana Valentine had eight each for the Tigers.

The championship game is set for 4:30 p.m. today.

Lions top Bulldogs

Cottage Grove beat visiting North Bend 41-29 in a nonleague game Friday night.

The Lions outscored the Bulldogs 8-2 in the second quarter to build a 23-14 lead.

“I think our girls are playing well,” said North Bend coach Mike Forrester. “We got tired and made some mistakes. It was just a little bit here and a little bit there that they pulled away from us. But our girls played hard. And I think we improved a little bit.”

North Bend has a mostly new roster after graduating several players from the team that finished third in last year’s Class 4A state tournament. And those new players are getting a trial by fire, which continues tonight when North Marion visits.

“If you look at the teams we’re playing in the preseason, Junction City is loaded, these guys are loaded, North Marion is loaded, Marshfield is loaded,” Forrester said. “When we get into a different part of our schedule we’ll be OK.”

Vikings fall

Megan Deblois had 11 points and Riley Peterson added 10 as visiting Newport beat Siuslaw 46-25 on Friday.

Kay Robertson had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings, who trailed 13-10 after the first quarter, before the Cubs pulled away.

“We started off fine,” said Siuslaw coach Noelle Wilson. “We just had cold shooting.”

Harrisburg tournament

Host Harrisburg ran past Reedsport 65-30 in the first round of the Harrisburg Tournament on Friday.

“This is a top-ranked team and we found out just what it’s like to play them,” said Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps. “They reminded me of Waldport. They were physical and could get up and down the court good, and we didn’t shoot well.”

Erica Traw had 17 points, one of four Harrisburg players in double figures. Leah Hoover led the Braves with nine points.

Reedsport plays Culver at noon today in the consolation round of the tournament.

North Lake Tournament

Powers fell behind 19-4 in the first quarter and never could catch up in a 50-39 loss to host North Lake at the North Lake tournament.

“We didn’t show up,” said Powers coach Jody Cyr. “We have been playing better. We lose by 11, we shoot 10-for-21 from the foul line and we miss 15 layins.

“We’re right on the brink of becoming very good.”

Nicole Bittner had 17 points to lead the Cruisers. Colleen Hunt had 20 for North Lake.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Roughriders run past Pirates

Roosevelt topped the century mark while beating visiting Marshfield 107-73 on Friday in Portland.

Cameron Jackson had 33 points, including seven 3-pointers, and three other Roughriders had at least 16 in the win.

Jesse McClintock led the Pirates with 16 points, while Chad Statham added 13 and Brogan Oswald and Jordan Shepherd scored 10 each.

“They’re very good, but we just flat out weren’t ready to play,” said Marshfield coach Doug Miles. “Would we have won No, we wouldn’t have. But it would have been a lot better game.”

Marshfield went up for the game a day early and watched the Portland Trail Blazers beat Miami on Thursday night before working out for an hour on the Rose Garden floor.

“That was kind of fun for the kids,” Miles said.

The game was set up as a way for Marshfield to face better preseason competition.

“I wanted tough games,” Miles said. “I told (athletic director) Greg (Mulkey) to go find the best game he could.”

The Pirates still are getting used to their hurry-up offense, and Friday brought a new lesson.

“I have no doubt that we’re doing the right thing, changing our style of play,” Miles said. “But we played right into their hands tonight.”

Pacific Rim Tournament

Illinois Valley, South Umpqua and St. Mary’s won their opening games at the Pacific Rim Tournament at Gold Beach on Friday.

With only six teams in the tournament, each squad is playing three total games.

Illinois Valley beat the host Panthers 53-40.

Steven Paul had 23 points to lead the Cougars, while Hugo Treinen led Gold Beach with eight.

South Umpqua beat Bandon 54-36 in another first-round game on Friday.

Andrew Nale had 14 points, while Kyle Blankenship added 13 and Kevin Heintz 11 for the Lancers.

Archie Garrett had 12 points and Garth Gant 11 for the Tigers.

In the other first-round game, St. Mary’s topped Santiam 62-44.

Max O’Sullivan had 20 points, Andrew Larrson added 14 and Lou Gambee 12 for the Crusaders.

Trent Foltz had 15 points and Kyle Greenwood 12 for Santiam.

North Lake tournament

Powers got 36 points from Jake Stevens, but missed too many free throws in a 53-49 loss to host North Lake at the North Lake tournament on Friday.

The Cruisers led 39-37 entering the final quarter, but shot just 2-for-8 from the line in the quarter and 8-for-23 in the game.

“We showed some growth,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb. “(We) just (had) a few too many bad choices, and then those free throws, gosh those come back to haunt you.”

Preston Fivecoat had 19 points and Dacodi Martin added 13 for North Lake.

Powers plays Prairie City in the consolation game at 2 p.m. today.

Vikings fall on road

Host Newport beat pulled away from Siuslaw in the second half for a 66-41 win on Friday.

Cole Skriver had 19 points and Eddie Crowe added 13 for the Cubs.

Drew Rainwater had eight for Siuslaw, which still is adjusting its football players to the basketball court after a long run through the playoffs.

Harrisburg Tournament

Harrisburg topped Reedsport 51-22 in the opening round of the Harrisburg Tournament.

Justin Smucker had 18 points to lead the Eagles.

Jason Fishel had 10 for the Braves.
