SEATTLE (AP) — Starbucks Corp. issued a recall Thursday for 167,000 coffee mugs sold in coffee shops and online following reports that nine people suffered minor burns.

Starbucks said when the mug is filled with hot liquids, the handle can detach, posing a burn hazard. The company received the first report of the defect in March, and has logged a total of 23 reports of handles detaching.

The 14-ounce Fusion Coffee Mugs are white with a black plastic handle and a stainless steel base. One style is decorated with a minimalist “EST 1971 - Starbucks Coffee” printed in black; the other sports the original Starbucks logo in brown. Both styles are made in China.

Starbucks said the mugs with plain lettering were sold in U.S. and Canadian stores and online between February and November for about $11. The vintage mermaid logo mugs were sold only at the Starbucks located in Pike Place Market in Seattle during the same time.

Bridget Baker, a Starbucks spokeswoman, said the items the company sells in stores and online “go through safety reviews and independent random testing to make sure every product meets global standards.”

In a statement, the coffee shop operator urged mug owners to stop using them and contact the company for a refund, plus a beverage on the house.
