Thurston handed host Marshfield a 54-27 loss in a Midwestern League dual meet on Wednesday.

The defending league champion Colts jumped out to a big lead by claiming pins in the first four matches — the night started at 160 pounds.

Marshfield got a pair of pins — by Coti Cook at 135 pounds and Zakk Borgogno at 152. Cameron Winfrey won his match at 145 pounds by an 11-8 margin.

The Pirates also won two other bouts by forfeit.

The match was the first action of the season for Marshfield.

“This was our first time out on the mat,” said Marshfield assistant Russ Namitz. “And we wrestled five kids up a weight class to try to fill a lineup.”

Marshfield is at the Eagle Point tournament on Saturday and then the Coast Classic at North Bend next weekend.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Braves win

Reedsport scored 19 points in each of the first three quarters and beat host Powers 70-35 on Wednesday.

Brice Young had 19 points to lead the Braves. Jason Fishel added 16 and Ismael Osorio and Sean Horton had 10 each.

Jake Stevens led Powers with 15 points.

“I thought it was a good game for us,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb. “We saw a lot of different looks. We played hard.

“Reedsport has a lot of good athletes and they shot the ball well.”

Both teams are in tournaments starting Friday, with Powers at North Lake and Reedsport at Harrisburg.

Tigers top Yoncalla

Max DeVillers scored 23 points to lead Bandon to a 52-44 win over host Yoncalla on Wednesday.

Archie Garrett added nine points for the Tigers, who won the contest that had been delayed by one day because of the aftermath of the big storm on Monday.

Bandon competes this weekend in the six-school Pacific Rim Tournament at Gold Beach, joining St. Mary’s, Illinois Valley, Santiam, South Umpqua and the host Panthers. The teams will each play one game Friday and two Saturday, with Bandon opening against South Umpqua at 4 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Reedsport wins big

Reedsport had four girls score in double figures in an 80-48 win over host Powers on Wednesday.

Hannah Smith led the way with 22 points for the Braves, while Chelsea Hitchcock added 15 and Brianna Ekelund and Tailor Nunn scored 10 each.

Bilhe Marshall had 17 points and Nicole Bittner 10 for the Cruisers.

“They got a lot of shots up and they were athletic,” Powers coach Jody Cyr said of the Braves, adding the game against the larger school was good for his team.

“We played the best basketball we’ve played all year,” he said. “We got exactly what we wanted out of it. We played a tough team and we improved every quarter.

Tigers tip Eagles

Bandon beat host Yoncalla 42-40 on Wednesday.

Becky Butler had 17 points and Grace Garrett added eight as the Tigers held on for the win despite 23 points by Yoncalla’s Heather McDonald.

Bandon now heads to Gold Beach for the eight-school Pacific Rim Tournament, which starts Friday morning.

The Tigers face South Umpqua in the opening round on Friday. The winners of the four quarterfinal games advance to the semifinals Friday evening.

The other schools are Santiam, St. Mary’s, Brookings-Harbor, Etna (Calif.), Illinois Valley and the host Panthers.
