The Prefontontaine Memorial Committee received a $5,000 donation from the Oregon Tourism Committee during halftime of the Civil War boys basketball game Tuesday night.
The grant money will help pay for the Prefontaine Hometown Project, which will honor the memory of Marshfield graduate Steve Prefontaine with plaques along the course of the Prefontaine Memorial Run and brochures with information about his accomplishments at Marshfield and later as a college and international standout.
Each of the plaques will contain an image of Pre and a different quote from him or record that he held.
The brochures also will include points of interest in the Bay Area, including Prefontaine Track at Marshfield High School and Pre’s burial site at Sunset Memorial Park.
Work on the project is expected to start soon.
Scott West, a 1975 Marshfield graduate and the current Travel Oregon chief strategy officer, presented the check to Bob Huggins, the executive director of the Prefontaine Memorial Committee.
Several other dignitaries, including State Sen. Joanne Verger, attended the presentation. |
