Karate students compete for a good cause in Coquille

Savannah Reeves, a student from Winston, took home the top prize at the third-annual Project Action Tournament, hosted by Coquille Martial Arts.
The event, held Nov. 17 at Coquille Valley School, helped to raise more than $300 for Project Action, a nonprofit corporation that provides karate scholarships for at risk children. All money will benefit kids in Coos County, primarily Coquille, Myrtle Point, Powers and Bandon.
Next year, the tournament goal is to raise $600, enough to allow one child a year’s worth of martial arts, gymnastics or dance instruction.
Reeves had the top score for all divsions, finishing with 20 points. The student at Southern Oregon Freestyle Karate, is coached by Lee Willis.
Runners-up for high point honors were three Coquille Martial Arts Students — Mariah Langenberg with 19 points, Taryn Lewis with 18 and Kaitlyn Davidson with 17.
“All were awesome martial artists,” said tournament director Karen Saxton.
The tournament drew students from across Oregon, ranging in age from 4 to 40. A total of 27 students from Coquille Martial Arts’ schools in Coquille and Bandon competed, and their results are listed in the Community Scoreboard. |
