The Southwestern Oregon Raiders begin preparations for the 2008 semipro football season Sunday, when they will hold a sign-up and tryout session at North Bend High School.
Team coaches and players will be at the lower practice field from 1 to 4 p.m. Any interested newcomers or returning players are encouraged to attend.
Coach Ron Wigington said the team is trying to get a jump start on the season after struggling last year against other squads that are able to practice more often.
“We feel like we need to kind of get ahead of the game a little bit this year,” Wigington said. “If we don’t improve in how we do things, we’re going to continue being at the bottom of the league. We need as much time as we can to get everyone prepared for the start of the season.
The team plans similar sessions later in December, including both Dec. 8 and 9, also at North Bend’s lower field, Wigington said. Formal practice will start early next year.
Wigington plans to install a new offense this year, which will take more practice time.
The Raiders compete in the Oregon Football League, which will grow by at least one team next season. The addition of the Springfield Buzzards brings the total number of teams to 10. Three other groups also are interested in having teams, Wigington said.
To be eligible to participate in the Oregon Football League, players must be at least 18 years old and out of high school.
