Alumni Report: McKenna has solid end to fall season

North Bend graduate Kelcy McKenna finished her first fall season of Arizona State tennis in dramatic fashion at the 13th-annual Arizona State University women’s tennis Thunderbird tournament, reaching the championship singles match before falling to the University of California’s Marina Cossou 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-4.

The Thunderbird tournament marks the end of the fall season for the Sun Devils . The spring season begins Jan. 11, with the Freeman Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas.

Swarthmore running

Former Myrtle Point standout Nyika Corbett is continuing to compete on the Swarthmore College women’s cross country team.

Recently, Corbett helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the annual Seven Sisters Championship, finishing 11th overall with a time of 19 minutes and 39 seconds in the 5-kilometer event.

Next Swarthmore placed four runners in the top 50 at the Regional Championships. Corbett led the way for the Garnet and her performance earned her all mid-east regional honors for the second year in a row. Corbett qualified for the national meet as a freshman, but did not make it back this year.  

Willamette XC

South Coast natives Kyle Kotaich and Chris Platano capped off another impressive season running for Willamette University. At their final meet of the year, the Northwest Conference Championships, Kotaich finished in 14th place with a time of 25:51 and Platano trailed him by only four places, finishing 18th with a time of 26:06.

The Bearcats took first place overall.

The following week the team took first place at the West Region Championships at Lewis & Clark College, though neither Platano, a Myrtle Point graduate, nor Kotaich, a Siuslaw graduate, competed in the race. Willamette finished 18th at the NCAA division III championships to end the season.

Portland State football

Former Myrtle Point and Marshfield standout Steven Cooper became a special teams contributer for Portland State University’s football team.

Cooper, a junior, ended the season with three total tackles and one reception for four yards.

Oregon State crew

Myrtle Point graduate Kaylie Towne helped the Oregon State women’s crew team to a fourth-place finish at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, the team’s only race of the fall season.

Towne sat in the No. 8 position on the 8+ team, which finished the course in a time of 7:18, just two seconds behind the third place team, Gonzaga University. Spring rowing begins on March 8 when the Beavers head north to the University of Victoria.

As a junior, Towne earned second team All-American honors, as well as academic accolades.

EWUgolf

Former North Bend standout Kellie Holmstedt has continued to build on her successful start to her collegiate golfing career at Eastern Washington University. She shot a 246 (82-84-80) at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Oct. 29-31 at Angel Park Golf Club, which was good enough to earn her an 87th-place finish.

The tournament featured 10 of the top 30 ranked schools in the nation and marked the end of the fall season. Spring golf will begin March 10 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.

Linfield football

Siuslaw graduate Gabe Haberly played in all nine of Linfield University’s football games.

He had six total tackles, four solo and two assisted. Linfield finished 6-3 on the year.

NCAA cross country

Former North Bend standout Ally Romanko recently completed her sophomore cross country season at the Air Force Academy.

In the first of her final two races, Romanko helped the Lady Falcons to a sixth-place finish at the Mountain West Conference Championships, finishing 42nd with a time of 24:15. Next, the women took 16th at the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Romanko finished the course in a time of 24:17 which earned her a 106th place.

At the same meet, Brookings-Harbor graduate Scott Sanders finished 53rd in the men’s race for Colorado State University with a time of 32:31 for 10 kilometers.

Sanders, a sophomore, helped the Rams to 13th place.

SOU volleyball

Marshfield graduate Heather Porter completed her first season on the Southern Oregon University women’s volleyball team.

Porter had 28 kills and 13 digs for the Raiders, who finished the season with a No. 11 NAIA ranking and a 27-5 record overall. Porter is also on the basketball roster for the Raiders this season.

George Fox volleyball

Carli Bowman, a 2007 North Bend graduate, recorded 125 digs in her first volleyball season at George Fox University. Bowman played in 54 games and had 12 service aces on the year. The Bruins finished the season with a 10-13 record overall, 5-11 in conference play.

Seattle volleyball

Coquille graduate Josie Christiansen completed her final season of volleyball at Seattle University.

Christiansen participated in 69 games this season, tallying 87 kills and seven assists. She led the team with 27 service aces, and also added 75 total blocks. The team finished the season 10-16 overall, 7-11 in conference play.   

OIT volleyball

North Bend graduate Stephanie Willett was one of a handful of Oregon Tech volleyball players to appear in every match this season.

Willett recorded 173 assists for the team and had 39 aces, second best on the club. She also had 257 digs for the Owls, who finished 23-13 on the season..

Back in Oregon

After beginning his collegiate basketball career at Louisiana State University, Siuslaw graduate Ben Voogd decided to transfer back to his home state and join the University of Oregon men’s basketball team. Due to Division 1 transfer rules, Voogd is required to sit out the entire year, but will join the Ducks as a junior next season.
