Marshfield’s girls basketball team opened the season with a road loss against Wilsonville, one of the traditionally tough programs in the state.

The Wildcats, who finished sixth at the state tournament last winter, pulled away from the Pirates over the final three quarters for a 62-50 victory.

Ali Worthen had 15 points to lead Marshfield, which hopes to follow up on last year’s playoff season.

Moriah Roberge added 12 points and Brianna George eight.

Megan Arnoldy had 15 points to lead Wilsonville.

The Pirates host North Bend on Monday in the first of back-to-back Civil War games that will be OSAA endowment contests. The girls play Monday in Coos Bay, with the boys meeting Tuesday in North Bend.

With proceeds from the games going to the OSAA foundation, admission prices are higher than normal and are charged to students from both schools. The cost to get in is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Powers falls

Riddle edged visiting Powers 45-44 in a nonleague game Friday.

Nicole Bittner had 22 points for the Cruisers, who were done in by poor foul shooting and turnovers. The Cruisers made just 22-for-62 from the foul line.

Not all was bad, though, coach Jody Cyr said.

“We did make a big improvement from the other night,” he said. “We showed a lot more energy on defense. We’re starting to get the concept of a press. They’re coming around.”

Powers hosts McKenzie tonight.

Tigers top Pacific

Becky Butler had 23 points and Briana Valentine added 14 as Bandon beat host Pacific 50-33 Friday.

The Tigers pulled away by outscoring Pacific 31-14 in the middle two quarters.

Natalie Manning had 10 points and Eva Digby seven for the Pirates.

Coquille wins

Coquille beat Oakland in the first round of the Douglas tournament at Winston.

Additional information was not available by press time.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Powers gets first win

Jake Stevens scored 36 points as Powers got its first win of the season, beating host Riddle 47-44 on Friday.

“We’ve got to get a more balanced offense,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb.

Stevens also had 19 rebounds for the Cruisers.

The Cruisers were happy to get their first win, Shorb said.

“It’s a win over a 2A school,” he said. “We’re happy about that. Hopefully we can move on and improve from here.”

Tigers top Pacific

Bandon roared out to a 24-3 lead after the first quarter and host Pacific never could catch up in a 62-43 win by the Tigers.

“The first quarter pretty much tells the story,” said Pacific coach Wayne Everest.

The Pirates managed to cut the deficit to nine points in the third quarter, but could get no closer.

“We made a good run at them and kind of ran out of gas,” Everest said. “The kids played hard the whole game. We took another little step. The focus is on league (play).”

Max DeVillers led Bandon with 15 points, while Garth Gant, Archie Garrett and Zinger Santos added nine each. Sean-Paul Wagner had 11 points and Reed Brady 10 for Pacific.

Oakers burn Devils

Oakland beat Coquille 77-61 in the first round of the Douglas tournament on Friday at Winston.

Andrew Young had 17 points to lead the Oakers, while Matt Dickson added 12 and Joey Lee 10.

Brandon Sampson had 15 points and Heston Altenbach 10 for Coquille.

The Oakers, state tournament regulars, had seven players score at least seven points.

“They’re quick and they’re deep,” said Coquille coach Dan Cumberland. “They’re good shooters.”

Coquille plays in the consolation game today at 2:30 p.m.

Vikings fall

Short-handed Siuslaw lost 54-24 to visiting Newport on Friday night.

The Vikings, who don’t yet have any of their football players, were held to 15 points in the first three quarters.

Danny Barnum led the way for Siuslaw with nine points.

Eddie Crowe had 13 points, while Travis Iverson added 11 for Newport.

The Vikings visit Reedsport tonight.

Bruins win

Brookings-Harbor improved to 2-0 on the season by beating visiting Hidden Valley 47-37 on Friday.

Kenton Bansemer had 10 points to lead the Bruins.
