North Bend’s girls swimming team swept a double-dual with Cottage Grove and Reedsport and Bulldog Matt Johnson broke a school record on Thursday at North Bend Municipal Pool.
The Bulldogs edged Cottage Grove 86-84 and easily beat the Braves 139-14. Reedsport is resurrecting the program this winter after a couple of years without a team.
Cottage Grove’s boys beat North Bend 91-74, while the Bulldogs beat Reedsport 109-22.
Rachel Heaney won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle for North Bend’s girls, and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. Kelli Kronsberg took both the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and also was part of the relay, along with Sarah Brown and Gwen Rogers. Brittany Jones, Reedsport’s top finisher, was fourth in the breaststroke.
Johnson set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 50.46 seconds, breaking the 1996 mark of Colin Wallace. He also won the 100 backstroke and freshman James Verger won the 500 freestyle in a solid time of 5:06.65.
Riley Johnson was third in the 50 freestyle and Allen Roy was third in the 100 freestyle for Reedsport.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bobcats win
Myrtle Point had three girls in double figures and beat host North Valley 56-37 in the Bobcats’ season opener on Thursday.
Krissy Johnston had a game-hit 22 points and Kylee Fischer added 12 for Myrtle Point. Sam Sanders had three 3-pointers and 11 points.
Raquel Robles led the Knights with nine points.
Crusaders tip Panthers
Veronica Valdez had 17 points to help St. Mary’s edge visiting Gold Beach 45-43 in a nonleague game at Medford.
Kourtney Moore had 12 points to lead the Panthers, while sisters Katherine and Kayla Zuber added nine and eight, respectively.
“We played excellent defense in our transition game, but we had trouble getting into our offense,”said Gold Beach coach Jim Hulslander. “I was pleased.”
The Panthers shot just 12-for-26 from the foul line.
“We’re going to get better,”Hulslander said.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Myrtle Point gets victory
Myrtle Point got its first win of the season, beating host North Valley 57-48.
Garren Hitner and Evan Rice each had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Willy Looney added 11 points and Scott Clark 10.
Looney helped break open a tight game with 10 of his points, including two 3-pointers, in the third quarter.
The Knights were led by Kevin Rose, who had 16 points.
North Valley outscored Myrtle Point 14-9 in the first quarter, but the Bobcats led 23-22 at halftime and built on that advantage in the second half.
Pacific wins
Michael Maynard had 16 points and Reed Brady and Sean-Paul Wagner added 12 each as Pacific beat host Glendale 58-48 in the Pirates’ season opener Thursday.
Pacific won the nonleague battle by outscoring Glendale 36-27 in the second half.
WRESTLING
IV pins Bruins
Illinois Valley beat visiting Brookings-Harbor 43-22 in the Bruins’ season opener Thursday.
Brookings-Harbor gave up three forfeits, meaning the Cougars had a 25-22 edge in the contested matches.
“The kids did an outstanding job,” said Bruin coach David Freeman, noting that IV is ranked second in preseason polls. “I’m very proud.”
Mike Schagett (135 pounds) and Evan Peterson (160) recorded pins for Brookings-Harbor, while Ray Mazjic (119), Dustin Paradis (140) and Joel Mitts (189) all won by decision.
