Waldport’s Jeff King scored 34 points to spoil Reedsport's season opener as the visiting Irish topped the Braves 60-52 on Tuesday.

King had seven 3-pointers to lead the Irish, who had no other scorers with more than seven points.

“We ran a zone and we ended up leaving him open and he got a lot of skip passes,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh.

The Braves switched to a man-to-man defense later in the game and put the clamps on King, but couldn’t overcome a 42-29 deficit entering the final quarter.

Ismael Osorio led Reedsport with 12 points and Sean Horton added 11.

“I thought our guys played hard,” Hixenbaugh said. “Everybody that I put in gave a lot of effort.”

Cruisers fall

Mapleton ran past Powers 55-35 in the Cruisers’ season opener Tuesday.

“Overall, I was pretty pleased with our half-court game,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb. “We gave up too many transition baskets. They’re a pretty athletic bunch we played tonight.”

Jake Stevens had 20 points for the Cruisers. Thomas Boggs had 14 and Chad Walker 12 for Mapleton.

Oakers top Bobcats

Oakland’s Joey Lee had five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Oakers to an 89-61 win over visiting Myrtle Point on Tuesday.

Garren Hitner had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bobcats, who fell behind 27-8 after the first quarter. Tyler Brown added 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Braves fall in opener

Waldport turned a 10-point game into a blowout by outscoring host Reedsport 24-4 in the third quarter Tuesday night on the way to a 61-30 win over the Braves in Reedsport’s season opener.

“Lots of good things happened,” said Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps. “There’s still a long ways to go. We’ve got to be aggressive. We got out-hustled.”

Jessica Cooper led the Braves with 10 points and Chelsea Hitchcock added six.

Hallie Price had 19 points to lead Waldport. Brianna Webb added 15 and Reba Eggert 13.

Fulps said the game was a starting point for Reedsport to work from.

Mapleton tops Powers

Visiting Mapleton outscored Powers 16-5 in the third quarter to take the lead on the way to a 44-34 win over the Cruisers on Tuesday.

Haley Patterson had 10 points and Nicole Bittner added seven for the Cruisers in their season opener.

“I think we have a lot to work on,” said Powers coach Jody Cyr. “But it was encouraging — good effort, lots of potential there. We’ve just got to score.”

Challengers top Bruins

Kiersten Barlow had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cascade Christian to a 41-17 win over visiting Brookings-Harbor on Tuesday.

The Challengers stymied the Bruins with a full-court press while taking a 16-2 lead at halftime.

Jessie Goergen led Brookings-Harbor with 11 points.

Pacific loses opener

North Douglas beat visiting Pacific 35-25 on Tuesday, outscoring the Pirates 21-14 in the second half.

Rochelle Hescock had a game-high 20 points for the Warriors.

Jesse Culley had nine points and Natalie Manning added eight points and six rebounds for Pacific.

SWIMMING

Highlanders sweep Pirates

North Eugene’s boys won all three relays to hold off Marshfield 92-78 in a season-opening Midwestern League dual at Mingus Park on Tuesday. The Highlander girls beat the Pirates 108-59.

Marshfield’s boys were led by Kacy Neal, who won both distance races, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.08 seconds, and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:17.47.

Freshman Garrett Swafford made his Marshfield debut with a win in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 2:23.96. He also was second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Marshfield’s girls got just two wins against the powerful Highlanders.

Jana Sadler took the 100-yard backstroke  in 1:15.99 and Kelsey Flathers won the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.23.
