Several South Coast schools tuned up for the basketball season in jamborees Monday night, while Bandon’s boys and girls basketball teams opened the season with regular games against Brookings-Harbor.

At Marshfield, the Pirates hosted Siuslaw, Reedsport, Hidden Valley and Douglas in a boys basketball jamboree.

Marshfield’s girls are at a similar jamboree on Wednesday in Grants Pass and the school has Meet the Pirates night tonight.

Meanwhile, at Coquille, North Bend, Myrtle Point and Gold Beach joined the Red Devils for boys and girls jamborees, though both North Bend and Gold Beach were missing several varsity boys because of the ongoing football playoffs.

The two regular games were in Bandon.

Bandon’s girls limited Brookings-Harbor to just four points in the first half and then watched the Bruins come back with Bandon’s starters on the bench in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers held on for a 42-35 victory.

“We played solid ‘D’ for the first three quarters,” said Bandon coach Ken Nice. “The fourth quarter, we let things get a little sloppy.

“I certainly like the effort and the way we competed.”

Becky Butler had 12 points and Briana Valentine added eight for the Tigers. Grace Garrett, Melinda Torres and Jennifer Torres scored six each.

Jessie Goergen had a game-high 14 points for the Bruins.

In the boys game, the Bruins led comfortably throughout, pulling away for a 73-33 win.

The Bruins, expected to be preseason favorites in the Far West League, got 24 points from Chase Bansemer, 12 from Nick Taresh and 10 from Fred Corpening.

“They’re bigger and stronger and we’re young and inexperienced,” said Bandon coach Matt Angove. “I told the kids, it’s kind of a barometer. They’re a state-caliber team for Class 4A.”

Angove said his team would work hard to be improved in time for league play, which starts Dec. 18 against Gold Beach.

Max DeVillers had 12 points to lead Bandon.

Tonight’s prep schedule includes boys and girls doubleheaders with Waldport at Reedsport and Mapleton at Powers. Myrtle Point’s boys visit Oakland, while Pacific’s girls travel to North Douglas and Brookings-Harbor’s girls are at Cascade Christian.

The first swimming action of the new season comes Thursday, when North Bend’s hosts Reedsport and Cottage Grove. Brookings-Harbor’s wrestling team is at Illinois Valley on Thursday.
