New show at Coos Art museum opens Dec. 7

The “By Land and By Sea” exhibit at the Coos Art Museum in downtown Coos Bay features the works of 50  artists. Each has created his or her unique work, or works, depicting images of agriculture, land resources, coastal life, and marine ecosystems. The 61 works in the exhibit are varied in medium and include metal, paint, photography and printmaking. The exhibit closes Dec. 1.

Starts Dec. 7

The museum hosts the Bay Area Artists Association Regional Juried Exhibition starting Dec. 7 and continuing through Feb. 16.

The exhibition will feature paintings, photography, sculpture and other three dimensional works.  An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at the museum, which is located at 235 Anderson Ave. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

 North Bend library

Mixed media works by North Bend artist Bernard J. Sherwood are on display on Coos Bay Public Library walls. The show features portraits in acrylic, interspersed with delicate prints of birds.

Sherwood studied at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and with Moya Del Pino, a professional portrait painter, in Ross, Calif. After leaving the Chicago Art Institute in 1950, he enrolled at the University of Mexico as apprentice to Diego Rivera. Sherwood moved to Oregon when commissioned to do a life-sized painting of the Good Shepherd for the Jesus Name Church in Empire.

The exhibit is open during regular library hours.

Coos Bay library

Ends Nov. 30

Wheel-thrown clay creations by local artist and studio potter David Willhite are on display in the Coos Bay Public Library.

The exhibit includes vases, mugs, sculptures, candle sticks, and household items. Willhite has been throwing pots since he was a student at Gold Beach High School and has been selling them at shows and galleries since he was 17.

The display is open during regular library hours.

Southwestern art sale

A student holiday art sale will be held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay. It will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Eden Hall Gallery, 1988 Newmark Ave.

Historical museum

The Coos Historical & Maritime Museum in North Bend is featuring the exhibit “Time & Topography.”

The exhibit chronicles Coos County’s cultural history. A topographical sculpture of the county also is on display. Interactive exhibits include a timeline photo hunt and “Make Your Own Topo Sculpture.”

The museum is located at 1220 Sherman Ave. and open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Bandon library

“Invasion of Privacy” is the theme of the art show on display in the foyer of the Bandon Public Library. Local photographer Kelle Herrick has zoomed in for a closeup view of the birds that live around us. Bandon resident Carol Fugere’s art appears in the glass cases. The exhibits  are available for viewing during regular library hours.

The Bandon library is on West 11th Street next to City Park.

Evergreen Court

Evergreen Court is displaying the artwork of Pat Weaver, at the independent living center at 451 O’Connell St., North Bend.

Weaver’s paintings focus on land and seascapes. She has been painting since she was 13 years old, and works in all mediums from watercolors to pastels.

Brookings

Signatures Gallery of Fine Art, 519 Chetco Ave., in Brookings, is featuring the works of artist Drew Struzan.

Myrtle Point

Watercolor artist Terry Magill has just opened the Many Hands Art Studio and Gallery, 1994 Roseburg Road, next to the veterinary clinic in Myrtle Point. The title “Many Hands” was chosen because many different hands worked to renovate the old Saw Shop/Food Bank building on the south end of Myrtle Point, according to a press release. Magill has been working with friends most of the summer cleaning and restoring the old concrete building.

Magill has been a watercolor artist all of her adult life. She specializes in painting rural scenes, mostly of the Pacific Northwest. She has paintings on display at the Loft Gallery in the Pony Village Mall in North Bend and at the Bandon and Coquille hospitals.

Magill will offer watercolor lessons to adults and students two days a week, beginning in December. For more information, those interested can call Magill at 572-5146 or 404-6302.

Florence

The Friends of the Florence Events Center is showing the award-winning selections from the annual, juried show, “Celebrate Arts!” The gallery will be open during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during evening performances. Opening in December

The Bandon Public Library will host a display of watercolor paintings, leatherwork and Christmas ornaments for the month of December.

Local artists Jean Boynton and Vanessa Jorgensen will display floral and seashore watercolor  paintings. Jean Onsrud will show unique, hand-beaded ornaments and snowflakes with a jolly hand-crafted Santa. Also, leather craftsman Max Hand will show decorative and functional leather.
