The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a flood watch for flooding of the Coquille River.

According to a Weather Service press release, sharp rises are anticipated on the Coquille River because of recent heavy rain fall. At 7:30 a.m. today, the river was at 18.5 feet. Flood stage is 21 feet.

Mike Stavish, a meteorologist for the National Weather service, said the water level is forecasted to reach 20 feet by 4 p.m. today. The river is expected to recede overnight and should be near 16 feet by late afternoon Tuesday.

“That will continue slowly receding through the remainder of the week,” Stavish said.

The release warns against driving through flooded areas as the water may be too deep to allow for safe passage or there may be unseen damage to the roadway. Persons living along or planning activities near rivers and small streams in the watch area are advised to monitor the development of the weather situation and to be prepared to take immediate action if flooding is observed or a warning is issued.
