Community Sports: Fast Breaks for Nov. 17: SCAT swimmers take high-point honors at meet

The South Coast Aquatic Team made a splashing debut to the 2007-2008 winter season, with two swimmers earning high-point honors in the Shakespeare Invitational at Grants Pass.
Matthew Johnson won four events and took high-point honors in the 15-and-older age group, while Kevin Waller won all nine of his events to take honors in the 14-15 age group.
James Verger also won three events at the meet, while Matthew Perry and Cassie McCutcheon also competed.
Meanwhile, at the Lincoln City Pumpkin meet last weekend, Johnson, Waller, Rachel Heaney and Rachael Wiese, a 23-year-old swimmer, all won events for SCAT. They were among 13 SCAT swimmers competing in the meet.
Individual results are listed in today’s Community Scoreboard.
South Coast Grapplers
The South Coast Grapplers wrestling club continues to hold practices Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Southwestern Oregon Community College Rec Center.
Last weekend, the club sent six wrestlers to the Kickoff Tournament at Churchill High School in Eugene.
Wes Turner, Johnny Dollins, Tyler Campbell and Ryan Campbell all finished first in their weight classes, while Wyatt McCarthy and Cole Smith were second.

Basketball training
The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon is pleased to have Jerry Moss, outreach director for the Portland Trail Blazers, come to the area to present a basketball coaches training session.
This training is free and available to all Boys & Girls Club volunteer basketball coaches and any other coaches from surrounding areas.
The training will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club, 3333 Walnut Ave., in Coos Bay.
Club officials said Moss has been a very exciting, upbeat and positive presenter in the past and promises to have excellent drills for players of all ages.

Turkey Trot
Anyone looking for exercise before the big meal on Thanksgiving Day is invited to participate in the South Coast Running Club’s annual Turkey Trot, a non-competitive run or walk on the Empire Lakes trails in John Topits Park in Coos Bay.
The start will be at 9 a.m. Thursday. Participants can choose their own distance from among several routes using the paved trails.
The entry fee is two or more canned food items, which will be donated to a local food bank. Hot cider will be available at the finish.
