The Southwestern Oregon Community College women’s cross country team had its best recent finish in the NWAACC championships, placing fourth in the season-ending meet at Battle Ground, Wash., on Saturday.

Francesca Frasier led the Lakers by placing eighth overall in 20 minutes and 8 seconds on the 5,000-meter course. The Lakers finished with 124 points, and beat South Division rivals Mount Hood and Clark.

Tracey Melgoza was 13th in 20:35, with Jesse Ward 16th in 20:45, Abby Gillespie 41st in 23:42 and Leah Partmann 46th in 24:28. Rachel Rameriz finished 60th in 25:57.

“The kids ran as well as we could expect,” said Southwestern coach Dan Neal.

Spokane won the team title with 27 points, while Everett was second with 73 and Lane third with 80. The Titans were led by former Siuslaw runner Leah Twombly, who was second overall in 19:27. Sierra Lee, another former Viking, was 22nd in 21:10.

Southwestern’s men finished sixth overall with 166 points, trailing Spokane (19), Everett (73), Lane (88), Clackamas (110) and Whatcom (136).

Kameron Ulmer was Southwestern’s top finisher, crossing the line in 21st place in 27:30 for the 8,000-meter course. Josh Frasier was 22nd (27:38), Peter Becker 36th (28:23), Andrew Scott 40th (28:42), Robbie Manning 47th (29:10), Travis Clark 56th (30:49) and Jon Peterson 58th (31:39).

The championships concluded a strong season for the Lakers.

“Again, I want to thank Kori Frasier for all her hard work and commitment to the Laker success,” Neal said.
