Local activities mark Veterans Day

A variety of events and activities are planned this weekend for area veterans and other residents.
Flag display
The Vietnam Veterans of America chapter 799, in cooperation with the Pony Village Mall and the Southwestern Oregon Veterans Outreach, has flags of the American Revolution on display at the Southwestern Oregon Veterans Outreach office, 208a, on the Mezzanine in the mall, at 1611 Virginia Ave., across from the military recruiter’s offices. The flags will be on display through Nov. 16 or longer.
Retired military personnel are available to explain the history of the flag. To arrange a tour, those interested can call the SOVO office at 756-8718.
SOVO is also gathering extra Halloween candy to send to the troops. Those interested can drop off candy at the SOVO office.
Marine celebration
The Coquille River Detachment No. 1042 of the Marine Corps will host a celebration for the 232nd anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps today. All Marine and Navy Corpman personnel can attend.

Coquille breakfast
The Elks will host a free breakfast to honor U.S. military veterans at 9 a.m. on Sunday, at the Elks Lodge, 54942 Maple Heights Road, east of Coquille. All veterans can attend; Elks membership is not required.
NorthBend breakfast
There will be a Veterans Day breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, at the American Legion Hall, 1421 Airport Way, in North Bend. The cost for adults is $5 and $2.50 for children under 12. The menu will include ham, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, juice and coffee.
Members and guests can come and there will be an 11th Hour Ceremony.
Veterans open house
The Bandon Historical Society invites the public to an open house honoring all military veterans on Veterans Day, Sunday, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bandon Historical Society Museum, 270 Fillmore Ave. S.E. and U.S. Highway 101.
During the event, three local veterans will speak about their experiences during their military careers.
* Jim Cawdrey, a retired major in the U.S. Army and infantry, will discuss the history and languages of Vietnam.
* Airlee Owens, retired from the U.S. Air Force, will talk about his experiences as a Russian linguist and in aerial reconnaissance during the Cold War.
* Gary Sands, a U.S. Air Force veteran, will talk about life as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division.
The militaria collections of two local men also will be on display for the open house.
Rick Hinojosa will show some of the items from his World War II collection, and Jim Giambrone will exhibit items from the Civil War.
The museum also has a large exhibit of local veterans’ memorabilia, including uniforms, medals, rifles, newspaper clippings, Life magazines, scrap books and numerous photographs.
Bandon breakfast
The Bandon VFW Post No. 3440 Ladies Auxiliary will be honoring all veterans on Sunday, with a Veterans Day breakfast. All veterans will eat for free.
The breakfast will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the VFW Hall on Bates Road, just past Hennick’s Home Center on state Highway 42S.
The meal will be $6 for adults (other than veterans) and $3 for children under 12 and includes pancakes, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, ham and coffee. A members meeting follows the breakfast at 1 p.m.

Reedsport potluck
The second-annual potluck in honor of our veterans will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, at the Reedsport Senior Center. This is a time to share memories and pictures and to join in a sing-along. Bring the entire family to this free event.
The main meat dish is being provided by caring citizens, paper goods and flatware by “The Old Town Merchants” and Winchester Bay Merchants Association. The dinning hall is being provided by Lower Umpqua Senior/Disabled Transportation, Inc.
