Flares in the sky last night near Winchester Bay were part of a U.S. Coast Guard training exercise.

The flares were used by crews from the Coast Guard Station Umpqua, said Lt. Josh Steffen, spokesman at the Coast Guard station in North Bend. The crews often use flares during practice drills and rescue scenario training, he said.
