Galleries open doors for 'Artwalk!'

Artwalk!, a self-directed tour of art displays and culture in historic North Bend and Coos Bay and the Pony Village Mall, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Visitors can start at any of the locations listed below and all locations will provide maps.

North Bend

Coos Head Food Store: 1960 Sherman Ave. Visitors can enjoy holiday recipes and samples made with local, organic cranberries and apples. Organic squash and pumpkin also will be featured in the food samples. Samples of several flavors of Sonoma Cider and wine also will be available. Hormone Free Turkey orders will be taken during Artwalk. Abstract artist Liz Youngker is the featured artist. The store offers a selection of organic foods and products for healthy living. Local and sustainable products are offered when possible.

Crystal Dolphin Gallery: 1901 Sherman Ave. The artist of the month is Kathie Johannes. She creates beads and glass sculptors with hot glass. Johannes soon will be teaching classes at the gallery. Her works include frogs, octopi, dragonflies, butterfly beads and more. Crystal Dolphin’s Stuff Your Own Mushrooms with a new variety of stuffings also will be available.

Select Art Gallery: 3440 Broadway. The exhibit will be featuring the pottery work of Coos Bay artist Terrie Tardie. Her opening reception will coincide with Artwalk! hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Participants are invited to stop by to see all of Tardie’s newest creations. There also will be refreshments and sign ups for a free drawing for a print by artist Chisum Lucas. The gallery represents more than 45 local artists.

Epiphany & Co.: 1989 Sherman Ave. in the Historic Odd Fellows Building. New to Artwalk! this month, the business will be open for Artwalk from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Although Epiphany is not scheduled to open until Dec. 1, the shop will be open and visitors can see their progress on the art gallery and gift shop that will feature original artwork, unique gifts and jewelry.

Fiction 101: 1980 Sherman Ave. This month’s show will feature “Portrait of the Artist,” self-portrait paintings and sculpture of local artists. They will be showing through the month of December.

The Framery: 1774 Union Ave. The shop will feature artist John Thorp’s fused glass. As a fused glass artist, Thorp described his work as, “In short, I cut, smash, break and fracture glass. Then I combine all the bits and pieces into one new and unexpected piece of art. Fusing glass is done in a kiln at between 1200 and 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. What the artist puts into the kiln does not always reflect what will come out.” 

Gallery by the Bay: 2100 Union Ave. A number of artists and artisans have collaborated in producing this month’s show. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Gallery 280: 1743 Sherman Ave. The gallery will feature Portland alternative photographer Megan Mahony and figurative artist Jan Mucklestone. Musical visualist Dano Moreno will be providing ambient guitar. The artists’ reception during Artwalk! will be catered by Chef Frank Murphy. The exhibits will be on display throughout November. This will be the final participation in Artwalk! for Gallery280 in 2007. The business will resume the Artwalk participation in the spring. New winter gallery hours starting Wednesday, Nov. 14, will be 1 to 6 p.m.,  Wednesday through Saturday.         

North Bend library: 1800 Sherman Ave.. The North Bend Public Library will feature a photography show by Lee Wright through Nov. 30. Wright’s imagery shows unusual patterns or points of view in found  objects (or found places), that most people might find common if they wandered past them, a press release said. Wright uses 35mm or 120mm film, then scans the images at high resolution and works them in Photoshop to “reveal or conceal,” areas of interest and prints them on high-quality inkjet papers with archival inks. Wright’s landscapes and still-lifes from Coos Bay and North Bend are rich in color, design and complexity, according to a press release. The show is free and open during regular library hours.

Oregon Coast School of Music: 2055 Union Ave. The school will host a night of music and art beginning at with a performance by Bob Saloum. A solo guitarist, Salaam’s repertoire ranges from classical to rock and swing to flamenco. Following that, Ida Jo Gates, classically trained pianist, will perform. Both Saloum and Gates teach at the school. Also Thursday, C.Z. Andersen will display her jewelry during the evening. Andersen works with semi-precious stones, transforming them into wearable art. Paintings by area artists will be shown in several rooms of the school and Oregon Coast Piano will showcase works by Keith Russett, local artist and performer.

Pneuma Studios: 1988 Sherman Ave. will feature the fantasy art of Peter Bogart. Bogart does his works in prisma-color pencil and this is a retrospective from the 1970s until now. Pneuma Studios also does custom framing, stained glass, beadwork and leather arts. Refreshments will be served.

Sozo Tea and Coffee House: 1955 Union Ave. is under new ownership and returning to Artwalk! with all new art and friendly faces, a press release said. Visitors can come see the courtyard behind Sozo and enjoy a free 8 ounce latté during the event.

Pony Village Mall

Artist Loft Gallery: The gallery in the east wing will feature Barbara Mahon with “Retrospective,” as well as “Christmas Extravaganza” a group show by Gallery Artists. Refreshments will be provided.

Collette’s Crepes: This restaurant in the east wing, will feature art by Curt Hitch.

The mall’s East Wing entrance is showing the work of acrylic artist Jack Wood of Port Orford.

Heritage Textile Arts Guild: Suite 131. This is a working studio featuring unusual, unique handcrafted fiber art items, a press release said. Headles & Treadles will feature hand-woven yarns and invites visitors to join the “knit-in.” Members will be giving assistance in beginning a scarf or hat (good for a holiday gift) and invite companionship while they knit. Refreshments will be served.

Rose Palette Art Studio & Gallery: Space 128. The gallery has expanded into a new location on the lower level in the Pony Village Mall. The current show will feature stained glass works by artist Sharon Jones, who is new to the area; jewelry by Linda Morris; ceramics of Sue Scott; pen and ink art by Bill Melton; oils and acrylics by Ermie Goodrich; and more.

Coos Bay

Black Market Gourmet: 495 Central Ave. The restaurant will feature the works of Coquille artist Kimberly Wurster this month.

Blackwell’s & Co. Hair Design: 153 N. Broadway. The shop will feature the art of Sherry Howk.

Coos Art Museum: 235 Anderson Ave. The museum will feature the 2007 By Land and By Sea exhibit, which runs through Dec. 1.

Pottery Company: 145 Anderson Ave. The shop will feature the works of artist Arielle Zomora. She creates pen-and-ink and acrylic paintings.
