North Bend won’t repeat as Class 4A volleyball champions.
The Bulldogs lost to South Umpqua, 25-22, 25-16, 25-14, in the Far West League playoffs on Monday, marking the end of their run as champions.
Triana Crane had eight kills and 10 digs for the Lancers, while Katie Bumgarner had 15 assists and five digs.
Alexandra Mateski led North Bend with 10 kills, while Katie Banta had 17 assists and five kills.
“It was kind of a microcosm of the season,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “At times, we played well.”
But the Lancers played better as a whole, as they did in the regular season when they finished third in the league and swept the two matches with North Bend.
“It just wasn’t supposed to be this year,” Willett said. “It was a lot of trying and working hard. It just didn’t go our way. We’ll get better.”
North Bend returns most of the lineup next season. Though the group didn’t reach the state playoffs, coming close will help.
“It was nice to get a couple extra days of practice,” Willett said.
South Umpqua, meanwhile, hosts the third-place team from the Capital Conference in a first-round playoff game on Wednesday.
Sunset Conference
Panthers fourth
Gold Beach avoided a one-game volleyball playoff with Coquille for fourth place in the Sunset Conference by beating visiting Myrtle Point on Monday.
Gold Beach now travels to face the third-place Bobcats on Wednesday for the league’s third spot in the Class 3A state playoffs.
Gold Beach coach Colleen Ellis said her team was motivated to avoid meeting Coquille today.
“I was not looking forward to that,” she said after the Panthers beat Myrtle Point 26-24, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20.
Kelsey Hamilton, Miranda Hunnicutt and Molly Hockema had 11 kills each in the win. Hockema had eight aces and Hunnicutt four, while Hamilton had seven digs. Rendall MacLaurie finished with 23 assists.
Kylee Fischer also had 23 assists for the Bobcats, while Erin Fullerton had six kills and six blocks and Maria Ciccarelli had five kills and eight blocks.
The winner of Wednesday’s match gets a road match on Saturday against the champion of the Lewis &Clark Conference for a spot in the Class 3A state tournament.
Devils win finale
Coquille swept Bandon 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 before learning its season was over with Gold Beach’s win.
Stephanie Jones had 10 kills and Nikki Hall added seven for the Red Devils. Mary Jo Pflaum and Christie Andy had five and four aces, respectively, while Laurie Breuer had 19 digs, Lindsey Cooper dished out 11 assists, and Kalei Libby had two stuff blocks.
Briana Valentine had 10 kills and eight digs and Maya Magallanes had six kills and eight digs for the Tigers. Grace Garrett added five kills and five digs.
Coquille coach Troy Cooper said the Red Devils had nobody to blame but themselves for missing the league playoffs.
“We let things get out of our control,” he said of losing at Gold Beach last week. “That’s the price you pay when you do that.”
But Cooper added that the future is bright, noting that the team has just four seniors in the regular rotation.
“We’re a young team,” he said. “Most of our starters will be back.”
