The Pirates were eliminated from playoff contention Friday in a 29-15 loss at Thurston.

Cruisers come up just short

Powers missed the Class 1A playoffs by a narrow margin Friday, falling 38-30 at Days Creek.

Thomas Wagner had three rushing touchdowns for the Cruisers, who fell to 5-4 heading into next week’s final game against Camas Valley.

The visiting Wolves overcame a 16-point deficit with 14 points in the second quarter, eight in the third and 16 more in the fourth.

The Cruisers were held to 14 points in the second half after leading 16-14 at the break.

“It was very disappointing, but Days Creek played very well,” said Powers coach Guy Shorb said. “They followed their game plan and didn’t make mistakes. We did.”

Powers committed four turnovers, including two interceptions at the Days Creek goal line, Shorb said.

“We couldn’t punch it in in the red zone a couple of other times,” he added.

Powers built a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter with a 3-yard run by Wagner and a 34-yard pass from Jake Stevens to George Lewis. Kyle Blanton added a pair of 2-point conversion passes to Stevens and Mason Lieuallen.

Days Creek cut the 16-point deficit to two with back-to-back touchdowns in the second quarter. Bronson Owens plowed into the end zone from four yards out, and Travis Fuller found Willy Johnson for a 75-yard hookup.

Wagner answered with a 2-yard touchdown run in the third period to put Powers back in front 24-14 before Days Creek exploded for three straight touchdowns, taking the lead for good.

“North Bend is a very strong team with good speed and a good scheme,” said Douglas coach Rick Taylor. “It was difficult to slow them down and hard for us to sustain a drive. Our guys battled hard for the entire game and I am proud of that, but that doesn’t take the sting of the loss out of them.”

North Bend quarterback Ethan Ottemiller completed 7 of 10 passes for 83 yards, and Luke Clark hauled in three catches for 39 yards and had an interception.
