The Southwestern Oregon Community College golf teams completed a strong fall season with good showings in a tournament at Avalon Golf Course in Mount Vernon, Wash.

“It was horrible weather and they still played well,” said Southwestern coach Marie Simonds, whose men’s team finished second and women finished third.

Southwestern’s men also finished second in their other tournament.

“I’m really pleased with how they played this fall,” Simonds said. “It was a great start. I can’t wait until spring.”

Freshman Justin Kadin led Southwestern’s men by finishing second overall with a two-round score of 148. Teammate Sam Ayote was fourth, at 152. Other Lakers included Jerry Morrell, 14th at 159; Jon Gaffney, 22nd at 161; Adam Burlison, 33rd at 165; and Dominic Selfa, 41st at 168.

Kadin had the first-round lead before Richard Lee of Bellevue shot a 68 in the final round to win by six strokes. Bellevue won the team title with a score of 617, three shots better than the Lakers. The event included 11 complete men’s teams.

Jessica Marcum led Southwestern’s women with a total of 184, good for fourth place. Holly Ewing was 11th at 203, Melissa Blamries was 14th at 206, and Kris Valencia shot 211 to take 16th.

Green River shot 559 to take the title, while Community Colleges of Spokane was at 572 and Southwestern at 589.

Wrestlers start Saturday

Southwestern’s wrestling team begins its season Saturday with three dual matches at home.

The Lakers host Yakima, Lassen and West Hills of Southern California.

Southwestern coach Adam Whitlatch said it’s a good early competition for his team.

The event will be held in the Southwestern Rec Center, starting at 10 a.m. Two matches will be held simultaneously on adjacent mats.

Southwestern faces Yakima at 10 a.m., while Lassen wrestles West Hills.

The other matches start about noon and 2 p.m.

“We’ll have a lot of wrestling going on,” Whitlatch said.

“I’m getting pretty excited to find out how it’s going to turn out. I think we’ve got three pretty tough teams coming in here.”

Two Lakers wrestling this weekend return from last year’s regular lineup — 141-pounder Joseph Michel, who finished eighth at the NJCAA national meet, and Fernando Pedraza at 197 pounds.

John Sutten (125 pounds), Brady Smith (133), Justin Hollingshead (149), Paulo Rocha (157), David Laird (174) and Chris Pannone (184) also were in the program as redshirts last year.

Meanwhile, Zolboo Enkhbayar, who wrestles at 157, was the junior champion in Mongolia and is the son of a former Olympic wrestler from that country. Ryan Hoover, a 285-pound freshman, was third in the California state meet last winter.

“We’ve got a lot of talent,” Whitlatch said. “I’m hoping to have some guys become eligible for the second part of the season. Our biggest competition here is the grades. If our kids are going to school and getting the grades done, we’re going to be all right.”

Women play key match

While the wrestlers are battling indoors, Southwestern’s women’s soccer team has a crucial match at home against Lane on Saturday.

The Lakers need a win in the noon match to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.

Southwestern is 10-6-0, while Lane is 11-3-1.
