Siuslaw wrapped up the Far West League volleyball season Thursday with a sweep over North Bend in Florence, 25-25, 25-21, 25-22.

The Vikings won impressively while getting 17 kills and six digs from Jessica Dodson, six digs from Seabre Church and 36 assists from McKenzie Mumpower.

Church and Shelbey McClellan also had five kills each for Siuslaw, which earned the Far West League’s No. 2 playoff seed.

“It was a nice end to the season,” Siuslaw coach Amy Peterson said. “It’s always good to win in three.”

Alexandra Mateski led the visiting Bulldogs with eight kills and five digs, while Bethanie Edgerton landed five kills and five blocks. Kezzy Colburg added six digs and three aces.

“I thought we played well tonight, they played a little bit better,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “I think Amy has a pretty good team there.”

The Bulldogs will play for the league’s No. 3 seed Monday in a playoff match at South Umpqua.

“In a one-game playoff, who knows what will happen,” Willett said. “We’re just excited to have this season going on for a couple more days.”

The winner of Monday’s playoff game will get to host a first-round Class 4A match on Wednesday against the third-place team from the Capital Conference.

Trojans clinch first

Douglas beat visiting South Umpqua, 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, to clinch the Far West League crown.

Courtney Bush had 19 kills and four stuff blocks to lead the Trojans. Katy King had 14 kills and 42 digs and setter Alaina Findlay had 37 assists, 25 digs and two stuff blocks. On defense, libero Jenny McClelland had 46 digs and Kenzie Dahl and Nikki Rocco had 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

“This was a hard-fought match,” said Douglas coach Carl Bone. “Both teams played great defense, as was evidenced by long rallies and lots of digs. I’m really proud of my defensive specialists (Dahl, McClelland and Rocco). They really had to work tonight.”

For South Umpqua, Katie Bumgarner had 23 assists, Triana Crane had 10 kills and a pair of stuff blocks, and Amanda McCarley had six stuff blocks and 13 kills.

Sunset Conference

Panthers top Coquille

Gold Beach beat visiting Coquille 25-14, 25-13, 25-13 to move into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings.

“The girls came out strong and stayed strong all three games,” said Gold Beach coach Colleen Ellis. “Tonight’s match was a deciding match. If we had lost, our hopes for  playoffs would have been over.”

The teams still could end up in a one-match playoff on Tuesday if Gold Beach loses to Myrtle Point and Coquille tops Bandon on Monday.

The fourth-place team visits Myrtle Point on Wednesday for the league’s third berth in the state playoffs.

Molly Hockema had eight kills and four aces for the Panthers. Kelsey Hamilton added four kills and eight aces and Rendall MacLaurie had 18 assists and six aces. Emmie Yeiter had four kills and four assists.

Challengers beat Bobcats

Cascade Christian beat host Myrtle Point, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-17, the Challengers’ closest match of the league season.

“The girls had fun,” said Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson.

“They played extremely well. I’m so proud of them. Cascade Christian is a great team.”

Maria Ciccarelli had 14 kills and seven stuff blocks for the Bobcats. Krissy Johnston had nine kills, three stuff blocks, 21 digs and two aces; Kylee Fischer had 24 assists, three kills, 12 digs and two aces; and Sam Sanders had three kills, 27 digs and two aces.

The Bobcats will finish third in the league no matter how they fare in their match against Gold Beach on Monday. They will host the fourth-place finisher, either Gold Beach or Coquille, in the league playoffs on Wednesday.

Tigers get first win

“It was a good way for Maya to end her home career,” said Bandon coach Shani Pierce. “She even got to do a couple jump serves. And we’ve seen kind of what they can do for next year, so that will be nice.”

BOYS SOCCER

Far West League

Bulldogs top Devils

North Bend finished the season on a winning note, beating visiting Coquille 4-1 on Thursday.

The Bulldogs got goals from four different players — two in each half — to finish the season with a winning record — 6-5-1.

Steffen Drucks, Sean Jany, Kyle Deming and Alex Clark had the goals for the Bulldogs.

Bruins take title

Brookings-Harbor beat visiting South Umpqua 4-1 to win the league title outright.

The Bruins built a 2-0 halftime lead and stretched it in the final 40 minutes.

Jacob Grady scored the goal for South Umpqua on a penalty kick.

Brookings-Harbor finished the season 9-2-1, with 28 points, and will host a playoff game against Sky-Em League runner-up Marist on Nov. 6.

South Umpqua will face Douglas in the league playoffs next week.

Trojans tie Pacific

Douglas and Pacific played to a scoreless draw, leaving Pacific in second and Douglas third in the final league standings.

Pacific, which finishes 7-3-2, will host a state playoff game on Nov. 3 against either Henley, Phoenix or Rogue River.

Douglas, 6-3-3, hosts South Umpqua in the league playoffs for the third seed into the state playoffs.

Pacific coach Tom Swenson credited goalie Julian Carter and the Pirate defenders with another strong match.

“We played good defense,” he said. “We couldn’t get lucky on a goal. We had some balls that were right there. It just wasn’t our day for them to go in.”

But the tie brought the good news of second place.

“That’s excellent,” Swenson said. “We just did not expect to be in this position at the start of the year. I could not be more proud of what those kids have done. We were inexperienced and kind of young and they just really overcame a lot and competed real well.”

Pacific will prepare for the playoffs with a nonleague match against Marshfield at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pete Susick Stadium.

GIRLS SOCCER

Devils beat North Bend

Coquille wrapped up its best season in program history with an 8-0 win over visiting North Bend on Thursday.

The Red Devils, who finished the season at 5-6-3, got two goals from Malin Fluske, two assists from Emily Usselman and a hat trick from Katlyn Shaw.

“We played pretty well tonight — I’m proud of the girls for finishing their season with a win like this,” Coquille coach Mark Usselman said. “They knew North Bend had a couple of good games as of late, and we wanted to finished what we started.

“These girls played the best game they probably played all year.”

Shaw netted her first goal in the second minute as the Red Devils opened a 3-0 lead in the first half. Lea Price and Dora Suhrer added scores in the sixth, and 38th minutes, respectively.

Shaw’s second and third goals came in the 45th and 63rd minutes, sandwiched around Fluske’s first goal in the 56th minute. Fluske, an exchange student from Norway, followed with her second goal in the 64th minute off a feed from Usselman. Frauke Fuchs drove in the final goal in the 73rd minute with a second assist from Usselman.

The game marked the final contest as North Bend coach for Rusty Artz, who has taken a position as sergeant of a new prison in Madras after holding a similar position at Shutter Creek Correctional Institute for many years. He reports to the new prison next month.

Artz was sad to see his team finish without any wins after a season in which the young group improved dramatically.

“I think that our problem has been youth the whole time,” he said. “We’re playing 18-year-olds against 14-year-olds. I’ve been starting five freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and a senior.

“I saw a lot of progress.”

Artz has been coach in North Bend for several seasons.

“I’ve coached state playoff teams. This team is that caliber of a team. Give it another year.”

Bruins finish perfect season

Brookings-Harbor beat host South Umpqua 2-1 on Thursday to complete a perfect season.

Ashley Juarez and Jessie Goergen scored second-half goals to rally the Bruins after South Umpqua took a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by Victoria Jackson.

The Bruins will host a playoff game on Nov. 6.

Brookings-Harbor coach Paul Angove was not sure which accomplishment by his team he was more thrilled with.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “I don’t know what’s better — the fact that we only allowed three goals or the fact that we went 14-0. They’re both huge accomplishments.”

The match also completed a big day for Brookings-Harbor freshman Ally Manley, who won the Far West League cross country title earlier in the day, then played the entire match and drew the foul that led to Goergen’s tiebreaking goal on a direct kick.

“It was a pretty good day for her,” Angove said.

Wildcats finish with win

Glide beat Douglas 1-0 on the strength of a goal in the 65th minute by Cassie Garrison on Thursday. Kristin Nelson had her ninth shutout.

The Wildcats finished with an 11-2-1 league mark, good for second place, and will visit either Baker or Ontario on Nov. 6.

Sutherlin tops UVC

Sutherlin beat Umpqua Valley Christian 2-0 to wrap up the season Thursday.

Brooke Hopkins and Destiny Cowan scored second-half goals for the Bulldogs.

The Monarchs will play South Umpqua in the league playoffs after edging Coquille for the fourth-place spot.
