Marshfield forces playoff match with Thurston in volleyball

Marshfield’s volleyball team will get another shot at Thurston on Saturday — this time with the Midwestern League’s top berth into the state tournament on the line.
The Pirates clinched a playoff game against the Colts after beating Willamette in four sets Thursday. Marshfield weathered a shocking loss in the first game but took the final three to win 20-25, 25-21, 25-8, 25-16.
“The first set was a little bit of an eye opener for us. We might have been looking ahead to Thurston so I told them, ‘It’s not going to happen if we don’t win here,’” Marshfield coach Tammie Montiel said. “The league title is on the line each game, and we can’t overlook anyone.”
The visiting Pirates got 19 kills from Ali Worthen, 13 assists from Leslie Silver and 14 digs from both Brittney Young and Taylor Scott. Silver and Young also scored eight and four service aces, respectively.
Eliminating mistakes was key for the Bucs, Montiel said.
“Willamette was getting a lot of points off our errors, and once we started playing better, they fell through and we pulled away,” she said.
Marshfield and Thurston both finished the league season at 9-1, with their lone losses coming against each other on the opponent’s home court. The host Pirates won the first game in four sets on Sept. 25, but dropped the Oct. 10 rematch at Eugene in five sets.
This time, they’ll meet the Colts on neutral ground at Siuslaw High School in Florence. The scheduled start is 6 p.m.
“It’s a good test for us going into the playoffs,” Montiel said. “We know we’re in win or lose, and we really get to figure out where we stand now.”
Montiel feels her players are primed to face the defending league champion Colts but plans to drill extensively today.
“We’re going to work on a few things Thurston showed us last time,” she added. “When we played them up there, they did a good job of finding the holes in our defense, and we didn’t react well.
“We’re going to adjust for that.”
The third match should bring out the best in both teams, Montiel said.
“It really evens things out with us splitting game. We’ve seen enough to know some tendencies, and we’re going to attack differently based on those,” Montiel added. “The neutral court is going to bring out a lot of fans from both schools. It’s going to be big.”
If Marshfield wins Saturday’s match, the Pirates will host a playoff game on Nov. 3. If the Colts win, Marshfield will travel to face the champion of the Portland Interscholastic League that same day.
