By Staff Reports
Wednesday, October 24, 2007 | No comments posted.
North Bend’s boys soccer team beat visiting Brookings-Harbor 2-1 on Tuesday, at least temporarily denying the Bruins the league title.
Steffen Drucks had an unassisted goal in the 20th minute and Alex Clark added an unassisted goal in the 45th for the Bulldogs, who improved to 5-5-1 and will finish fifth in the final league standings after third-place squads Douglas and South Umpqua tied on Monday.
Brookings-Harbor, which fell to 8-2-1, scored in the 77th minute.
“After playing equal with many teams this season, it was good to come out on top,”said North Bend coach Blaine Deming, who followed his traditional trend of using bulldog references when discussing the victory.
“We bit the Bruins in the nose early in the battle and held on to out-hustle them as a team for the rest of the game,”Deming said. “We ran as a pack. We played great team ball. We played like dogs.”
Deming said North Bend “had 14 heroes, but Travis Perez made a great save with one minute left to secure the game.”
“Our defense, led by Taylor Strand, repulsed attack after attack, while Sean Jany and Alex Clark did an outstanding job forcing the Bruins to play stellar defense,”Deming said.
The Bruins still will clinch the league title with a win over visiting South Umpqua on Thursday. But if the Bruins lose and Pacific beats Douglas, the Pirates and Brookings-Harbor would share the crown.
North Bend finishes the season with a home match against Coquille on Thursday.
Sutherlin tops Devils
Sutherlin beat visiting Coquille 3-1 on Tuesday.
The Red Devils had a 1-0 halftime lead, getting the goal on a penalty kick by Shane Coleman in the 37th minute.

Gold Beach had one of its best matches of the season, but came up just short against visiting Creswell, falling 2-1 on Tuesday.
“For the first time this season, we had more shots on goal the first half than our opponent, and Gold Beach was playing hard and with heart,” said coach Tamara Snook.
Gold Beach got its goal when Brodey Carpenter knocked in a corssing pass from Andrew Martinez.
Martinez had six shots on goal, while Matt Anderson, Miles Bernadett-Peters and Hunter Golay also had shots. Aaron Eells, known now in Gold Beach for his flipping throw-ins, played tough in defense with Brett Martin and Leland Snook, while Jake Hatten had 12 saves in goal.

Red Devils win
Coquille overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to beat visiting Sutherlin 3-2 and secure fifth place in the league standings.
