George Lake, a longtime regular at North Bend Lanes, rolled his first 300 game Thursday night during the Varsity league.

Lake has frequented the bowling alley for many years, and in the past has coached high school bowlers. He’s also a member of the Bay Area U.S. Bowling Congress Board.

“He’s an ambassador to bowling,” said North Bend Lanes Manager Mark Mattecheck. “He’s just a neat guy.”

Lake’s 300 came during the third game of a 776 series, one of the better scores at the bowling alley this fall. His first two games were 243 and 233.

Million Dollar Challenge

Natalie Hill and Kortney Dixon from Sunset Middle School won coveted gold medals at the ninth-annual Million Dollar Challenge, held last Saturday on the Coos Bay waterfront.

Each contestant competed against a set of age-graded standards established by the Road Runners Club of America and the South Coast Running Club.

Hill and Dixon ran in the 2,500-meter race for students ages 14 and under. The fastest time in that race was turned in by Eduardo Rodriguez, also from Sunset, in 10:22. He earned a silver medal for his effort. Hill and Dixon led the girls in 10:58.

In the 5,000-meter event, Jay Flora earned a silver medal, finishing first in 20:20. Doug Vesey of Myrtle Point was second in 20:48. The women were led by Lisa Hanson of Bellevue, Wash., (23:40). She was followed by a trio of Harbor Lights Middle School students from Bandon. Hailey Iverson, Claire Ledig and Riley Wahl finished together in 25:33.

Kirk Patrick of Coos Bay completed the 5-kilometer walk in 42:20.

The Challenge, sponsored by Wal-Mart and the South Coast Running Club, drew 48 entrants and netted over $450 for middle-school cross-country programs in Bandon and Coos Bay.
