Fast Breaks: Karate students take top honors

Three students and the head instructor from Reiss’ East-West Karate won individual titles at the Battle of Champions karate tournament in Salem last weekend.
Four others also placed in the annual event.
Shyler Antis took first-place honors for her division in weapons forms and traditional forms and second in creative forms.
Jordyn Wicks took first in creative forms, second in weapons forms and third in traditional forms.
Heather Smith was first in traditional forms and second in sparring.
Instructor Jason Reiss finished first in weapons forms and team sparring and second in traditional forms and sparring.
Olivia Dutcher was second in weapons forms and traditional forms and third in sparring.
Dylan Morgan was fourth in weapons forms, traditional forms and sparring.
Ann Marie Broderson finished second in creative forms and third in traditional forms.
Leann Croy was second in sparring.
Cheer academy
The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon’s newest program is under way — the South Coast Cheer Academy.
Classes with coach Kallie Aakre are available every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the club’s gym. All boys and girls in grades 1-8 are eligible to participate for $40 per month with a current club membership.
Participants should wear comfortable clothes and footwear. Registration forms are available at local schools, the Club office and online at www.bgc-sworegon.org. Those interested can call 267-3635 for more information.
Volleyball registration
The deadline for students to turn in registration forms for the Boys & Girls Club volleyball season is Oct. 31.
All boys and girls in grades 3-6 interested in participating in the sport should turn in their forms to the Boys & Girls Club. The fee is $40 with a current club membership but will increase on Oct. 22. Practice may begin as early as Oct. 15 with games starting Nov. 10.

Sportsmanship winners
Bay Area Sportsman’s Association sportsmanship and official awards for Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon fall soccer and flag football games played on Oct. 6.
